Something Has Happened...

Well, a few months back, I found a good mechanic and got the '76 300D in top shape for winter- valve adjust, block heater, parallel GP conversion and a few other goodies. From that day, I have enjoyed super quiet running, good cold starts as low as 15F without block heater, good warm re-starts, improved MPG- Diesel nirvana! Then a couple of weeks ago I thought I'd try Bio for the first time. With tank at around 1/4, I got it filled with B10 at an Esso. The attendant informed me that their Bio was fish oil- which I had never heard of. I thought it was always VO based, but this being Atlantic Canada....

Anyway, after a day or so, I wasn't too pleased. My idle got rougher, Diesel clatter increased noticably, smoke at idle got worse and worst of all, it started nailing bad when cold, and even after fully warmed up, I was hearing an occasional loud ping when upshifting from 2 to 3 especially. I have since topped up fuel with straight Diesel again, and these symptoms have reduced somewhat, but not completely.

It seems that fish based Bio may have problems- anybody got any insight?

Fish oil biodiesel should not be the problem..........I wonder how old the stuff was...and if it was contaminated....I am running B20 in my car with ZERO problems....

You must have got some bad fuel. Nothing inherently wrong with biodiesel made from fish oil, it's very similar to vegetable sources; in fact some fish oil biodiesels reportedly have better temperature chaacteristics.

Get you a new screw on filter... fill it up with Diesel Purge and install it... deal with the air bubbles if you need to .. pump the primer, etc...
See if that helps...

Sounds fishy to me.

I would consider running a few tanks of diesel through with a little additive first before anything else. My experience has been on occasion a bulk fuel carrier truck appears not to have been cleaned out properly and the fuel you purchased was contaminated with something previously in the bulk carrier. Removed one car tank a few years ago that had bunker C or something simular. This might fit your experience as they would not use the same truck for that fuel all the time as it is a very low volume fuel here. The fuel was boneless I hope? Did you notice if every cat in the neighbourhood was chasing your car? I can almost visulise a new thread of how many miles per fish. Where are you located in atlantic canada?

Just filled up again last night with normal Diesel after running the tank to near empty. I've taken a bit of a run this morning, and it's running much better now. There wasn't even any nailing at startup, so we're good!

I suspect as most have said it was the Diesel in the B10 that was the problem, not the fish oil- very low volume as you said. Haven't noticed any cats sniffing my tailpipe.

I live in Sackville NB. How about you? I got the bad B10 at an Esso in Moncton on Trinity Drive. I think they are the only Bio dealer in the Moncton area. And come to think of it, they have their Bio pump located right on the same pad as their automatic car wash. The other rows of pumps are located well away from the car wash. This would make their fuel at very high risk for contamination I would think- even though the whole establishment was just built there no more than two years ago.

Live in amherst, nova scotia about ten miles away from you. Much shorter as the turkey flies. Can you send our cat home? I should have guessed where you were and why our cat went missing a few days ago. I noticed the clouds of smoke on the horizon in your direction last week but did not add two and two. Will drop you a personal message.

I dont know if this can be the case considering you only used b10, but supposedley biodiesel to a certain extent "cleans" out your fuel system but in the process clogs the fuel filters with the old sediment. This is only what i have heard. But, it would be the first thing i checked, especially if you havent changed your filters in a long time.
