Low sulphur diesel

I hear that it is coming, in a year or two.
Two questions:
What would be the imact of low sulphur diesel when used in older diesel engines, such as my 240D.
With the current prices of diesel fuel ruuning roughly same as the premium gas, wonder how much over and above that we have to pay for this premium diesel?

Thanks,
Vahe

ULSD is already being used in Kalifornia and parts of Texas. Its not really a threat to oil lubed IP's like the MB's have, more of a problem for fuel lubed rotary style IP's like in older VW's, GM's, Fords, etc. Even this is not a big deal as it is simple to add a lubricity additive at every fillup even if its just a little motor oil. Sorta like the additives to keep unleaded fuel from causing valve resession on old gassers. As IP's are rebuilt the new ULSD compatible parts are used and slowly the issue will go away. RT

I'm already buying ULSD here in Calif. wherever I can get it, just because of the enviro benefit it offers. So far, nobody is charging a premium for it. I mix with biodiesel or SVO, though as the previous post noted, lubricity issues with ULSD isn't considered a problem with the Benz injection pumps.

It probably will have no effect on you. Some have argued that the injectors will last twice as long with B2 but I don't believe that it will. Maybe a little longer but that is the best you can hope for. I'd say drive it and forget it. I dumped Diesel Clean Cetane Booster and even Marvel Mystery Oil in the past. Absolutely no difference except lowering my cash level. YMMV

Want better lubrification ? Go biodiesel. Too expensive ? Make your own.
