Towing a w123.

Hello to all.

I have a question but it isn't diesel
related.

Here goes:

Can a w123 with manual tranny be towed or not?

I know that an automatic can't be towed faster
than 30mph but what about a manual.

Louis.

I say yes. I've pulled a 4-speed manual 200+ miles w/o any problems (tow job) and plan on setting-up a 240D manny tranny as a 'towed' for my Dad's motorhome.

This next weekend, I'm heading north to retrieve a 240 with a five-speed manual. However, I'll yank the driveshaft on that precious item because I don't know anything about 5-speeds and how they lubricate themselves.

Ahhhh, glad to hear you are getting the Euro 240 manual. Hope to see it one day. Is it in working order, or a donor for the tranny and components?
JL

BTW, thumbs up to the person who provided the link to the spell checker! (Larry Bible or Engatwork I think. maybe?)

Since Randy has already let the cat out of the bag, I don't think he will mind If I post a link to the 5 speed he is picking up:

http://mbca.cartama.net/showthread.php?t=4774

This would be the only 240D I have ever seen with Climate Control.

That's not the only thing; this little unit has SLS too.

Sounds nicely loaded for a 240.

Nice location Randy , ever use NASA's World Wind? I tried installing it to check it out but it was giving me issues.

Randy

I bought a euro "82" 5 spd 240D with SLS last fall. There was lots wrong with the car. The guy had run over a stump or something and the lower pan was mangled so bad the sump on the oil pump was broken off. Good thing the oil didnt get low. Anyway I fixed everything, swapped the tranny and drive shaft into the wifes car and sold the "82".... I guess if you put the 5 spd into your wagon you'l have to shorten the drive shaft again?

It's definitely going in the wagon so, I'll probably just build up another shaft.

Any car with a manual trans can be towed without much of a problem. Just avoid AWD. (not a problem if you are looking at old MB's)

An auto trans on the other hand will burn up in short order, you will need to have the drive wheels off the ground to tow an auto car.

My manual says to flatbed them and I would if I ever needed to.
