Tranny almost skipping 3rd / shifting to 4th early on '85 300D

I've been having this problem for quite some time now, the tranny in my '85 300D likes to almost skip 3rd gear on anything other than hard acceleration. It likes to just spend a split second in 3rd before going to 4th. I've got the bowden cable adjusted to spec but but it still does it. The only way really to keep it in 3rd is to put it in "S" and then shifting it to D when starting out.
This problem's got me worried.

I have the same problem - for me it is not the cable. (85 300TD Ca) - I was told possibly the valve body or the governor. I am talking to a mechanic. Let you know what I find out.

Occasionally on my '85 too

Does yours do this under light acceleration? When you give it a little more pedal does it shift out correctly?

I have a slight hill after I turn out of my neighborhood and when I take off rather slowly my '85 will almost skip 3rd. But when I need to move on with the traffic it goes through the gears precisely as it should.

I have to push the pedal at least past half way if not nearly to the floor for it to shift right(?). It will downshift without too much trouble if it's in 4th.
Mine is also a CA model.

Mine was doing EXACTLY the same until about 2 weeks ago.

I installed a K1 accumulator spring kit.

It cost $10.50 at the dealer. Part# 126 270 44 77.

See my thread:

Saw your thread and read this article...

Good job on the K1 replacement. I found this http://transmission.articles.mbz.org/k1/
article most informative as well.

Thanks for the good news. It's the kind I like, cheap and easy to fix.

Vacuum adjustment

I was wondering how to adjust the vacuum to the transmission. I know that there is an adjustment on the IP that regulates the amount of vacuum but which way do you turn it to adjust it for more vacuum?

Trani switch fixed mine

Did a re & re 3.07 out, 2.88 in. The correct load on the trani against governor pressure makes the shift perfect. I love it.

I was wondering how in the heck can you adjust to vac modulator on the tranny with it in the car. I've been under it and it looks like there's no way to get to it w/o dropping the tranny down.
I've read somewhere that you can make an adjustment to regulate the vacuum to smooth out that 1st to 2nd shift by simply turning the adjustment on the vacuum bleed valve. I can't find that thread or post anymore. The search option SUCKS.

The same questions have been posted so many times over and over that the archives are too crapped-up to find what you are looking for. Only a small percentage of the responses are really helpful some are destructive and foolish. When possible add trusted usernames to your searches. It is almost like being able to ask that person the question.

Then often someone elects to follow bad advice and never posts the end of the problem so the thread reads like the bad advice was the solution to the problem.

The SD used to do this too until I played with the ALDA and got the boost back up to spec. Also make sure you check your linkage for full throttle movement. The last little bit makes a huge difference in movement for the IP
