New noise has me worried

Since I'm down to one (registered) car now -the 82 300CD, every new noise that pops up has me kind of paranoid.

I've been hearing a noise from LF wheel area when turning slightly right at 40mph or so- sounds to me like a FWD CV joint going bad, but, semi-quietly, and twice today I hard a knocking noise for about a second each time (louder than the other noise). I took a look at the front end suspension today when I got home, but didnt see anything out of the ordinary.

The car has all new lower control arm bushings and track rod bushings. The shocks have been on there since I before bought the car (they're aftermarket and semi rusty in spots) and the upper control arms have not been replaced yet (what I was expecting to be bad). I've seen an upper control arm ball joint pull out on my friends car before so I really hope thats not whats going to happen. The joints look alright, the bushings on the other end are still tight against the control arm.

Nevertheless, its still got me worried, any suggestions? Could it be the bearings? I did the rotors so long ago I don't recall what they looked like.

I'm almost contemplating registering my 560 and transferring tags to it so I can drive that, at least I know that car is safe (and probably cheaper to fill up )

Sorry, I have nothing to add! Yes, the next thing I would suspect too might be the wheel bearing. Try repacking it and see if the clicking changes, or stops.

I notice in your signature you also have an 87 300D. Why is it out of commission? you mentioned a #14 head, is it the reason? My 87 300d has 247k and everthing is well, so far! ...............BB

I had clunking noises on my driver side recently too for a while, so I checked, and found the whole braking strut supports part of the suspension to be loose and rattling around due to loose bolts I freaked out and promptly tightened both parts I suspect stealership on that one, but now my clunking is gone, and the suspension feels tight too.

I'm going to put it up on the lift today after work and check everything I can. Possibly even unbolt the upper ball joints and check them for play when theyre unloaded.

The 87 is out of commission due to a exhaust stud that broke off, that so far has been drilled and attempted to be extracted but it still is holding its ground. I need this car back asap! argh!

Inspect the front end, if you can't find anything turn the radio up. If their is a problem it will get worse to the point that you can ID it.

If it makes you feel better replace the upper control arms, and maybe the shocks. When the car is up on the lift grab the tires and check the wheel bearings for play.

Well I feel a little better about it now. I just didnt want one of the upper arms to pop out while driving- that happened to my friends 240D, luckily he was only going 10mph at the time.

The arms I suspect have been replaced previously. They were in good shape and still pretty tight. Usually the ones I replace have the pressed bushing ends coming apart and rotting away. The could have been almost new. Ball joints were tight, bearings had new grease in them so I guess I did repack them.

My main suspect is the shocks. Theres small bushings at the bottom of them that have semi clean spots at the edges of them meaning theyre probably moving around. Brand is "gas-a-just" -hmmmm... I'll replace them soon.
