My A/c didn't blow cold on my "new" 1996 E3ooD so I hooked it up to my gauge set and it had 0 lbs of pressure in it! Would not take a charge. I decided to bring it into our local dealer. The auxillary cooling fans are dead as is the condensor which is cracked and leaking. $1500 to fix. Any thoughts? Obviously this is why the guy unloaded the car at this point --among others.

Are you sure it's not the evaporator that's leaking?

I don't think you will get the evaporator replaced for $1500, at least not at the dealer.
The condenser costs $262 from this site. If you own guages, you're most of the way there to fixing it yourself. - JimY |

Thanks Guys. The condensor is the problem. It's leaking from a crack in it. The fans don't work and need replacement. Is 1500 too much for this set of tasks?

Sounds high to me. They might be charging you $700 bucks for the condenser, or some such crazy price. Replacing the condenser, dryer, vacuuming, and charging shouldn't be more than about a two hour job, I'm thinking. The fans could be any number of things, but I wouldn't expect them to run with no charge in the a/c system.

are you sure fan is dead?
test fan direct to battery (briefly) to double check it is really dead. The fan stays idle except in very hot weather and stationary traffic so its quite normal not to see it working for long periods of time or ever. There are other things that could cause fan to appear to fail so dont just change it without positive proof it really has.

Since the condensor is your leak, I'd say you're pretty lucky. As Jim said the condensor is a few hundred dollars and not too difficult to replace. You will need a few cans of r134 and a vacuum pump and you'll have what you need to get the job done. Even if you BUY a vac pump, you'll come out WAAaayy cheaper than the having this done at the stealership.
Good luck, |

It looks like a simple job on a W210, maybe maybe 2 hours labor at $100 an hour. If I remember correctly the upper metal support above the radiator unbolts (4-6 bolts) and then you can slide the radiator back. The fan will have to come off but that is just held on with one bolt, 8mm allen wrench I think will fit. Then disconect the condensor and pull it out.
They must be charging a very high price for the condensor. Just change it yourself.
