I sure hope it would go 100K miles without a failure.

Wonder if it got any oil changes in the run?????

They sure had very little downtime if any!

100,000 miles / 30 days = 3,333.33~ miles per day

@ an average speed of 139.696 mph they'd have to be driving them 23.861 hours a day! That leaves them with about 4-5 hours the entire month to service the tires/oil/fuel etc...!!!

Notice that nothing was mentioned about everything on the vehicle functioning properly when it passed 100K.

All it required was a functioning driveline.

100,000 miles, at 140mph for 30 straight days is a VERY trying test. I am quite sure alot of vehicles on the road today (straight out of the showroom) could not do it.

But, it does not test anything but the endurance of the engine and transmission. It doesn't even heat-cycle the engine thousands of times like in normal driving.

I think a better test would be to have an intercompany car or an outside person who drives 100-150,000 miles a year give their test results back to MB.

its not really the mechanics that you have to worry about in these new cars, its the electronics, which instead of deterioration over long miles, deteriorate over time. id rather see it go for two years with 20,000 miles without anything failing.

no, i am sorry but it is my job.

all well and good they did the testing in texas where it was warm. how about real world testing in a wisconsin environment? start and stop 2.5 miles a day to work. weather ranging from mid 60's currently to low thirties at night for now. due to be warmer sometime.

i am more humbler than you and will not mention my giving and sacrifical nature to handle this projectfor mb .

Gimmick

I didn't read the background, but I wonder if the car got any special treatment before the big record attempt. Gimmick plain and simple.

As far as I know the FIA sport stewards picked the cars from the production line in Sindelfingen, afixed seals and those were shipped to Laredo.

This is the worst case of energy waste.
Typical big conglomerate attitude towards conservation.
How much fuel did this whole production consume ?

Besides...this has absolutely nothing to do with every day driving durability.
The vehicle(s) was at operating temperature all the time.

Al Gore would blow a gasket about this !

If it causes Al Gore to blow a gasket, than theres something just
inherently correct about it.

At 139.696 mph I'm guessing the 320cdi doesn't get much above 24-25mpg (tops) based on another thread where it was said a 400cdi at 150mph gets around 21mpg..... so at 24 mpg @300,000 miles.... ~12,500 gallons of diesel @ 2.40 a gallon....$30,000 in fuel.

And it continues...

Mercedes-Benz E 320 CDI: World record holder and fuel miser

Stuttgart/Tallahassee, May 20, 2005

Having established their much-publicised diesel world records, the three standard Mercedes-Benz E 320 CDI models have continued to make headlines. Following their 30-day, non-stop trial on a five-mile oval circuit in Laredo, Texas, the saloons achieved a new record during a fuel consumption test drive to Tallahassee, Florida, which was certificated by the USAC**. Without stopping to refuel each of the unmodified CDI models covered a distance of 1039 miles (1672 km), which corresponds to a fuel consumption of 4.75 litres per 100 kilometres. That's 49.9 MPG!!!
