'84 190D, RR window intermittently won't work, not the switch?

Regarding my brother's '84 190D, the RR window sometimes will not go down or up. However, when it does this, by holding the switch and banging on the door, the window will then work. At first I thought it was a switch problem but I don't see how banging there would affect the switch up in the center counsel. He was using that switch to show me the problem. What do you guys think is wrong with it? When I get time I'll pull the door panel and clean that switch as well as clean the center switches, but I don't think that is the problem, what say you guys?

Thanks
David

2 possibilities

I've had 2 different problems with windows in my 190D's. One was the door switch, which would keep the console switch from working properly as well. The other problem was with the thermal overload protection on the window motor itself. I've been told that it's OK to bypass the thermal overload on the motor (by an electric motor repair guy).

If the switches check out, take a look at the thermal overload protection.

I'll do that. When the window wouldn't work, neither of the switches would get it to move unless holding the switch and banging on the door with your fist.

Thanks
David

201's may be different but on 124's the wires going to the doors would become brittle and break at the flex point. You might want to pull the cover off and check there as well.
