engine pull 76 300d 5cyl no turbo
Hi all, I am trying to pull the engine from a 1976 300d 5cyl non turbo diesel. I am new to this task and need to find out the safest place to put the chains from the load leveler on my engine hoist. I have the haynes manual but it is not very specific as to what to disconnect and how to pull the engine. Any help or pointers to a web site would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks, Roger |

There should be two places at the back of the engine and one in front to hook to. Most importantly don't forget to remove the 6 screws on the torque convertor and push it back.

hook points
I will try to find the three points to hook to. I crawled under the car and found a point where the drive shaft hooks to a disk. it has a three legged piece with three bolts into the disk and three additional bolts that dont go through the three legged piece. Are these the six bolts you refer to in your above reply?
Thanks, Roger |

found hook loops
I found two loops that come from behind the valve cover and bend toward the front (one on each side) but they sure dont look like they would hold the engine.
the one on the front drops down behind the pulley in the center and then across to the a/c it looks like about 1/8" steel. Let me know if this sounds right. Thanks, Roger I have about decided that the Haynes Mercedes-Benz Diesel 123 series 1976 thru 1985 4 & 5 cyl looks nothing like my car. Components are located different than shown and dont resemble what mine looks like. Is there a better manual I can attain for the purpose of pulling the engine and using it for purposes other than powering a MB sedan? Thanks again, Roger Last edited by rbarr8; 07-22-2005 at 11:03 PM. Reason: add additional information |

The torque converter is bolted to the flywheel and bolts are accessed between engine and tranny bell housing underside.

The brass colored loop thingie in the back is exactly what I was talking about. The one in front sounds about right.

Thanks to you all
I have now pulled my first mercedes engine/transmission. I used the haynes manual but could not have done it without your help. I am now anxious to get it cleaned up and mounted on a frame to use to power a 30 kw generator. I will direct couple it so I will need some kind of electronic governor. I think they are made for a specific injector but I am not sure. That will be another post.
Again Thanks to you all. You don't know how good it feels to succeed. Roger |
