Hey,
I replaced the one main gear with a replacement from www.odometergears.com. It worked great for about 4 months then stopped again. Went in again and found another gear stripped. Went and replaced the other 2 gears purchased from the same place. It has now worked great since.
The moral of this story? If your going to do this repair replace all the gears.

I feel this repair is necessary. I need to know the interval between maintenance.

Also, never, ever touch the speedo needle. They are easy to break and will bounce all over the place on you. And as far as I have been able to learn they cannot be repaired once broken.
You have been warned! Again!

As far as I can tell you can't get to the odo gears and all without taking the speedo face off. This requires removing the needle. Am I wrong?

I replaced all 3 gears without touching the needle. that's on an electric speedo. I don't know about the cable driven type.
I didn't touch it because I read warnings not to here on this site and I have repeated that warning several times.

I purchased a 1976 280 gas engine. a few weeks later the odo. & trip odo. quit working. The trip will not turn to reset.Then the gas guage quit.
I put some "sea foam" in the tank. Now the gas guage bounces around,but sometimes stops on 2/4 or so. The low fuel light comes on and off no matter where it shows fuel.
Anyone have a suggestion??

Search for "fuel sender" You will have to remove it, disassemble it and clean out all the gunk. You may have to resolder (or remove) the copper low fuel warning light.

Find the dieselgiant pictorial on the odometer problem.....

Had the same problem on my '81 300D but managed an easy fix. My problem was that the speedometer worked but odometer didn't. Turned out the brass gear on the number reel shaft was loose on the shaft itself. Took out my "Last Glue" gear which I'd purchased at the Del Mar fair a few weeks ago. Put a drop of the "cleaner" on the gear where the shaft protrudes thru, wiped it off with a clean rag, then put a drop of the "last glue" on the end of the shaft and applied a tiny amount of the powered metal which came in the kit. It adhers immediately and gets steel hard! Problem solved. I also applied a vinyl patch on my driver's seat with this same glue and it sticks like nothing I've ever used. You have to use this stuff to believe it. Fixed a broken plastic part on the glove compartment door of my daughter's E300 diesel with a single drop and it closes, and stays latched, like it was new. Don't know what this stuff is but it makes Super Glue look like white paper paste. Not cheap but does the job eveytime I've used it.
