Windshied replacement 240D

I've been reading a lot of posts about windshield replacements as I'm going to make an offer on a 240D on Tuesday which requires this procedure. Just curious as to wether or not this is feasible for a DIY? Anybody tried or had success doing it themselves?

- Peter.

Is the ws cracked or is it just leaking?
If it's cracked; try a pick and pull to find one; order a new w/s seal; AND either way, pay a good window guy to do it for you who has installed ws 's on older MB's
He shouldn't charge you more than $75.
They will do it right, with the proper lube...
no worries...

Cracked

It's cracked bad courtesy of a large stone thrown up by an Excursion on a freeway a while back. Also I can see large gaps between the metal and the rubber gasket in the corners so I'm asssuming the gasket is shot. Dont know if there's any rust underneath that but as this is Phoenix that may not be a problem.

Good luck finding someone who will replace it and buy you a new one if he cracks it. I couldn't find anyone to stand behind his work, so I did my own rear glass. I'll be doing a windshield pretty soon, I expect. I can't say I have done one on a MBZ, but I have done 3 others , successfully.

In a recent expen$ive restoration of my 240D, I let the body shop replace the front windshield which had a small crack and some body rust extending under the gasket, the glass was $250. the rear windshield was leaking pretty bad, I had a pan inside the trunk to contain some of the water. On the rear the glass was ok, it only needed a new gasket, no rust was found under the gasket and the leak totally stopped with the new gasket.

I just had a company called Glass Doctor come to my house and replace the original windshield in my 300D. After watching him do it I'd never attempt it myself. Total cost was $300 which included a new gasket.

If at all possible insist that the shop who does the work use a factory gasket/seal. The aftermarket seals are not as good. How do I know? I've had had several windows replaced over the years using a good glass man, an Independant that has his own truck and is very experienced with installing old window seals. I once provided him with a seal that he said he didn't like because it was from the cheaper source they use at autoglass shops. I think WorldPac http://www.worldpac.com/ also sells the cheaper seals.
I recommend you pay $10 or $15 more and get a gasket that seals better. If you don't want to pay the extra bucks you most likely will have drips (then rust) or a funny looking corner on the seal for the rest of the life of that windowseal.

Concensus

So it seems the concensus is that this is not a job to be attempted myself. I will probably abide by that opinion if I do get the car. Thank's for the input.

This is not a job for the feint of heart. I will probably do the next one myselfbecause (1) I'm cheap (2) I like the satisfaction of doing it myself (3) I can do a better job than a glass guy , particularly if I find rust in the channel, (4) I have a spare piece of glass.

I am sure it can be done DIY- check the archives. It just depends of your comfort level.
