1976 240d is there a trick to getting the windshield wiper fluid working. I've pushed pulled and no fluid will come out.
I want to thank everyone for all previous responses..My car is running like a dream..All other problems have been resolved. This is the last thing I am having trouble with.. I could not have made it will all of you.... |

I assume that you are pushing on the end of the stalk toward the steering column.
If you are and nothing is happening, pull the connector from the pump on the bottom of the reservoir and use a test light while someone pushes the switch with ignition on. If there is no voltage, problem is the switch or associated circuitry, if there is voltage, problem is pump or hoses. Good luck, |

Just out of curiosity...
do you have a foot pump on the floorboard near the left wheelwell? Not sure when (or if) they stopped using them. At least on the older cars you depressed the foot pump to get the washer fluid to the window. This will also activate the wipers until you let off the pump. Makes for a hany little intermittent wiper on 2 speed only systems too.

The nozzles coud be clogged up. Use a pin and stick it in the nozzle. You can also aim the stream with the pin. I have used compressed air to clean out the nozzles. Good luck and don't despair. You will fix it.

You probably do have the foot pump on the floor; it's waaaay up high on the left side, possibly covered by the carpet. It's a little hinged metal plate with a bumpy surface. In typical Mercedes fashion, it not only squirts the windscreen, it also turns on the wipers! However, this information alone may not be enough. My 240 squiter has other problems, like plugged-up lines from crud in the reservoir, and broken check valves that make the system function. Check these items out if the pedal doesn't make things go. |

Foot Pump
Sheila,
I had a 1976 300D that I sold after 200,000+ miles. My windshield fluid pump failed early on. My mechanic installed the foot pump, after cleaning out all the "crud" from the lines, and I never had a moments trouble after that using the foot pump. Good Luck, J |
