Should have adjusted the valves ages ago.
I just got done adjusting my valves about 200 miles (1.5 weeks) ago. Front half of the engine was VERY tight, back half wasn't too bad with the #5 intake valve being right in spec.
I cleaned off the valve cover with Napa Aluminum Rim brightener. looks great! It idle much smoother and starts easier as expected, but it seems to have drastically improved my fuel mileage! Before, in my normal mixed highway/city driving, I'd get about 21.5-23 mpg. After I adjusted my valves, I filled up with the same fuel as normal, used the same amount of Stanadyne additive as normal, and drove the same amount as normal, and got 26.35 MPG!!! It's amazing!

I did my vavles this weekend. They were all a little tight and now that I've got them back in spec I'm hearing a weird swishing noise coming from the back of the engine. When I disconnect the flex tube going to the air filter and stick my ear to it I hear a weird thumping noise. I'm going to go back in this weekend because I think I might have gotten them a little loose if anything. Power's the same, though. So's MPG.

Some of my vehicles had responded very well over the years to doing seasonal valve adjustments. Valve lash does very enough with the ambient air temp. at the time of adjustment to warrant it but be careful. I am looking at your geographic locations. One in Michigan and Oklahoma. The extreme seasonal temp. changes in Michigan can cause havic with diesel valve clearance.
Pick a day with moderate temps for that season to get the best adjustment. I adjusted valves on one of my gasoline vehicles one cold winter day (why? I don't know!) and nearly fried my valves. A cold adjustment at 20degs.F is alot different than one at 80deg. F. Of course I am doing this in a driveway or unheated garage.....
