I know that was the stock stereo on my '81 240D and for years prior to 1981. However, I am unsure if they used that on the higher end cars. It's a question of when the Becker BE612 was first used. My '86 SDL came with the Becker 612 when I bought it used, but it really should have had the BE 754 in it (someone got it off of an earlier vehicle). Bottom line: that is a stock stereo from 1981; whether it's from a 300 SD is another story.

Thanks, good to know. It does look kinda cheap. Suppose its a good excuse to upgrade to an mp3 compatible system

Thanks for the pic. That looks more like the units I've seen. Yours is an 84 though.

in 1979 they still used the europa beckers--

much better looking!

yes-- do yourself a favor and install 4 speakers of stock size, all new wiring, a new head unit of your choice, an amp and a single small subwoofer.

itll make a WORLD of difference in how much you enjoy the car!

when i got my 240 i immediately installed new speakers in the factory locations(2 in the dash...) and left the becker, adding an ipod and tunecast.

sounded like...well... 2 tweeters producing sound transmitted over fm radio waves... so i completly reworked it and it is very nice!

Adding rear speakers and HeadUnit(rear shelf was rotting, had to build one of masonite):

In search of a pic - that is an 81 300sd - or at least advertised as such

Yeah it should have a Becker 612 in there from the factory.

We have one of those radios (like you have in your car) in a box in our basement, it came standard on the lower MB's....(this one was in a car in germany, my dad removed it and moved here and it kinda tagged along appearantly)

My original radio was in the car when I got it, it worked fine I suppose, but I wanted more than local FM radio, so I upped to a kenwood headunit + sirius satellite, best thing I have ever done. I later did the same to the 83, both cars are "high tech" now. and it sounds great on the stock speakers, so no issues there.

The manual that came with *my* '81 300SD showed pics of both styles of Becker, with a notation that the digital Becker was optional equipment.

I would say that the analog one is a rare OEM unit, actually. Maybe even 1981 only for 300SDs.

I agree, I bet some cars had it, just extremely few because of the kind of cars (real exepensive) these were. Note this car also lacks a moonroof, another expensive option, perhaps the buyer didn't want those frills and ordered one specifically without them/paid less for it etc....

Judging by the absent moonroof I would definatley think the radio is also what came with the car, they just opted for the cheaper one.
