goop for intake/exhaust manifold gasket ?

Thanks to fastlane, I have a new intake/exhaust manifold gasket, should go on this weekend ('82 240D). Is there any kind of sealant/goop to smear on the gasket to maximize my chane of making my exhaust leak go away ?

no

but you should check it for straightness. if it has gotten warped you wont get it to seal. it needs to be checked with a straight edge. if you arent sure how to do it take it to a competant machine shop and get it checked. if warped it can be planed.

there is some reason the gasket blew. they dont just give out.

Sometimes they do...
The one on my 300SD gave up the ghost at 270k. Whistled like a mad man

Manifold was fine...head was fine...just a narrow spot in the gasket I guess. The new one is workin good

T. W. you are on the money

I finally got the thing apart and I can see something wrong - the offending exhaust tube was either not all there or was eaten away (by leaking exhaust ?) - the flat surface of the flange where the manifold bolts up the head is severly pitted and not all there where it needs to be flat at wide (to get a good seal).
I'm sure a machine shop could plane it smooth, I'll have to work this.
the car has 280K, although it has been consuming coolant (slowly) as of late, I've seen the temp get a little higher than I'd like on a few occasions (before stopping and putting more in). Looks like I need a parts 240D (for a home head rebuild) or a 5cyl turbo to **swap** *insert evil laugh here).
I'm gonna flat-plate-sand the manifold as good as I can and throw it back together things are more clear to me now (but I still need a car for work on monday)

be sure to

check with a straight edge and a piece of paper. if it wont hold paper it is not flat. if it is not flat a new gasket will not hold long if at all.

i can see a turbo car might blow one out after a while since it is actually under some pressure and runs at a higher temp too, tending to want to warp things more often.
