Will this help?

could my diesel tank be leaking? i really am not getting good diesel milage... under 20mpg. and we cant figure out for the life of us why its not getting better diesel milage. would it help to take the fuel lines off my old engine, clean them up and replace the ones i have in my car right now? i have a buddy that has some solvent that will clean the lines real well. if you have any other suggestions let me know. I CANT PAY FOR THE DIESEL!!! thanks

ra

ps. how about the air filter?

When was the last time routine maintenance was done on the engine such as valve adjustment, filter replacements – yes, including air filter – and purging?

is the car

stock?

the air filter is oil bath so it could be clogged.

also is it an automatic? they dont do so well on mileage. are you talking around town or highway? if around town 20 is correct.

i dont think the lines will help. and if it is leakig diesel the smell will be obvious. are you sure the odo is working correctly? if it slips then your apparent mileage will be worse.

All fluids and filters need to be changed.
The valves need to be adjusted.

Its a 240D right? So no turbo boost to check.

Check the timing chain for stretch and I'd time the IP as well.
If the mileage still isn't that great pull the injectors and have them gone through.

If you think you have a fuel leak track it down and fix it. Fuel leaks will kill your mileage.

What is IP, also i already did the valve adjustment just before the snow started to fall. it has been a lot colder lately maybe i should do it again? what can I do to clean the airfilter? ex. soak it in diesel or something (boyfriends idea). how is the chance that I am getting the same mileage as I did with my old motor.
thanks, ra

IP = Injection Pump

Check your timing and add a woodruff key if needed. This should also bring the IP back into line.
If not then it may need to be adjusted.

I think you'd be better off running down to the local auto parts store and picking up a new filter if its really dirty...

Perhaps you have some brakes that are dragging? is the car pulling to one side more than another?
place a clean piece of wood or rag under the back end of the car (under the fuel tank) see if you are leaking anything...I was in my 300SD..it wasnt a BIG leak but it was sufficient enough to kill my MPG.

Advance Auto has a Purolator Air filter for $6.80 or so.

Woodruff keys bring the IP back in time as well? I thought they just brought the cam back in then you had to set the IP timing in relation to the renewed cam timing. If it does bring the IP back in time that'd be great. I definately would go ahead and buy a new filter. I wouldn't mess around with trying to clean it. It would probably be more trouble than its worth.

Replace the air cleaner, unless your car is old enough to have one of those oil bath ones. Then yes clean it.

Considering the age of the car I would probably pull the injectors and send them out to be tested/rebuilt. Inspect the pre chambers while the injectors are out a couple of them may need replacing as well.

i think it would cost you more to soak the thing in diesel than 2 just buy a new filter...i dont even think soaking it is a viable option....i dont think its too good an idea either....IMO..

That all depends on if its a paper filter or an oil bath cleaner.....you replace a paper filter but you wash out and refill an oil bath filter. I don't believe we have gotten a clear answer as to which kind it is just yet.

I did a search on Fastlane and could not locate an air filter. So it may be an oil bath type filter.
