Yeppers, that is one the first things I do when I get a "new" old Mercedes. My 240D had actual chunks of black stuff in the PS fluid. I am sure it must have been the original fluid.

Kirk, there is not full agreement on what kind of fluid to use. On the older models, the factory fluid was ATF (meaning what later became known as Type A ATF). Type A is hard to find nowdays. I see it on the shelf in C-stores, but not in auto parts stores. Many people think that modern ATF (meaning Dexron or Mercon) damages the pump seals, thus they prefer to use commonly available PS fluid. I am not familiar with what is used in the newer MB models.

As far as the ATF damanging the seals in the pumps...

...last time I checked there were similarly made/type seals in transmissions and didn't "fault" because you put ATF behind them.

Just my thoughts....

I changed my fluid and filter the other week and noticed the steering feels stiffer off center, at least when the pump is cold. Used Valvoline PS Fluid, maybe it's no good.

You can use regular Dextron tranny fluid in your Mercedes and is perfectly acceptable.

how do you remove the filter? On other 123 and 126s there is a nut and a white plastic deal on the resevoir. On my 123, there is a push nut and the spring. I'd like to flush and replace the filter, but I'm afraid to cut the pushnut.
