190D, Good, Bad, Complex?
My focus is starting to irritate me and I have been tossing around the idea of trading it in for another diesel Mercedes. The better half wants something that is not huge and can reach 60 in seconds rather than minuets, so I was thinking about a 80 something 190D. How complex are these cars? Do they have a computer brain or other complex and failure prone electronics? I would like to have another car that I can do most of the work on my self. Any other cars I should consider? Thanks. –Bryan

They are almost identical to the w124, so no electrics to go wrond there. But don't excpect too much of a speed boost from a similarly powered w124. They are smaller, something like 200kg lighter than the w124, comfy for 2 people, but the back seats don't have too much room.
I've had my 201 2.5turbo for an year already and the things I changed are: leaking A/C compressor, one belt tensioner (don't know if it's called like that, the one that looks like a small shock), and a water pump. The best mileage I've got is 36mpg on a long trip (twisty) and 31.3mpg on the highway (was going fast though, min speed ~80mph and max 125mph, I think the avarage was around 95mph) With mixed driving city/highway I get around 27.7mpg (more highway than city, but my city's traffic is crazzy) A friend of mine has a 2l 201 and he says it consumes close to 47mpg on a long trip. |

From what I've driven, a 190D 2.5N/A with a manual tranny can keep up with most 300D's on the road in the 15 second 0-60 range A 2.2 is going to be about the same speed as your 240D, mabye a bit faster. The 1987 190D 2.5T was the 2nd fastest production diesel car in the world at the time. '87 300D being #1.
I agree with Deni, don't plan on having room for anybody over 8 years old in the back seats if the front occupants are 5' 9" or taller. With my 6' 4" frame in the front of a 190D, there was about 3" (literally) between the front and rear seats. |

Thanks for the tips, I guess I will keep my eye out for a 2.5. We're used to driving hatchbacks so the lack of space in the should not be a problem. Any common problem areas to watch out for? What engines are in these cars? Thanks again. -Bryan

I loved my 2.2L 190D. I got it to achieve 50mpg one time. Mileage usually was within the 43-45 range. You need the 5-speed if you get the 2.2L. The automatic is way too slow.
