My front right brake caliper: ATE or Bendix?

ATE has a real long bleeder about 1 inch long...the bendix is short...but look close at the body..it should be cast into it in rasied relief.

Our '83 has a bendix on the left rear...and it looks like that one. So I'll say bendix.

its not really possible to tell from that picture. you need to look closely at it. there will either be a tiny ate in cursive or it will say bendix in plain sized letters.

It is really easy to tell the ATE from the others once the wheel has been removed. Right in front of the area where the pads will be removed from the caliper, you will see a sheet metal ribbon shaped piece that is held by two drift pins, these are the ATE pad retainer springs. Other brands use different devices here.

Not according to the pictures here on MercedesShop, the bendix springs are wire. The ATE pics are showing a sheet metal ribbon spring.

i have had many bendix calipers and they all had the sheet metal spring. also if you go on fastlane and look up anti rattle spring you will find that only the rears have a specification for ate only. all that needs to be done is the caliper closely inspected.

ATE uses user -friendly pad retainers that you drive out with a drift. Bendix uses tiny little fiddly cotter pins that don't fit easily

they both use pins that you have to drive out. the cotter pins go on the end of the pins

Are you replacing the caliper or just the pads? My advice, for what it's worth, replace both sides. Once you have the caliper off, you should be able to see the letters ATE in cursive on the half closest to center of car. If not, thne they are bendix. For safety and peace of mind, I replaced all my calipers, rotors, pads, all four for $550. autopartsgiant.com It doesn't matter what you have now as long as you replace both sides similar.

I think those pictures are a mix of fronts and rears.

In any case, I decided to buy a rebuilt caliper instead of doing it myself. I'm no expert, and I'm not sure I can get it back together without leaking or squeaking. An extra $40 for insurance...
