Towing a 97 E300 with four wheels down?

Can a Mercedes be towed behind a motor home or do I need a car dolly or have to pull the drive shaft? Towing a 97 E300.

Not necessarily true if it is a mile or two. If not, a new transmission can go in after the tow,

Its actually best to tow a mercedes completely off the ground on a car trailer.

At the very least, no drive wheels (rear) on the ground, it will destroy the transmission.

Exclamation the owners manual in my 82 SD states

The vehicle may be towed with the driving wheels on the ground and the selector lever in position "N" for distances up to 120km/75 miles and at a speed not to exceed 50 km/h/30 mph.
To positively avoid a possibility of damage to the transmission, however, we recommend to disconnect the drive shaft at the rear axle drive flange on any towing beyond a shout tow to a nearby garage.

I always thought that a transmission with a front and secondary pump (say an MB 722.3) was not supposed to be towed any appreciable distance or any appreciable speed, but that a trans with out the secondary pump (newer GM, Ford, 722.5) could be towed, since nothing would spin in the trans during towing on these "no secondary pump trannies"?? Same reason tow-starting works on a secondary pump trans and not the front pump only ones. True or False?? I don't know.

Even though I don't know, C32AMG will. Hopefully, he'll weigh in.

No, you can't tow a MB like that is the short answer. Well you can, just schedual a trans swap when you arrive.

The best way to tow a MB like the manual states is on a flat bed.

Little fwd cars tow very nice behind motor homes.

I took our 240D on a 900 mile towed trip. I put the rear wheels on the tow dolly and left the front wheels on the ground. I locked the steering column with the wheels straight. I made up some removable tow lights. It towed like a dream.
We owned a '84 300TDT that had been flat towed. I didn't find this out until later.... Reverse gear was marginal after that.
