No vacuum in booster and engine won't stop W124 1992

My car is the following:

124.128
602.962 I5
300D 2.5 Turbo 1992

VIN ends with 560988

First of all, I have to say I have found lot's of information here and done a great deal of preventive maintenance on this car without even posting 1 message on this forum. I have done a complete break job with Brembo disks and Pagid pads + parking brake parts and back end plates from MB, Bilstein front shocks and GY TripleTread tires.

But I am now away from home and stuck with these two-three problems:

1. Engine won't stop after turning key all the way to OFF position. (Yes, I kill it by hand with the IP cut-off)

2. I have no power brake assist from the brake booster. I have unhooked a few vacuum hoses that are attached to that bigger hose running from the vacuum pump (located in the front part of the engine almost lined up with the inj. pump) towards the brake booster. I cannot feel any vacuum at all. Same thing with the EGR valve, no vacuum felt once the tubing is removed from the actuator (although this may be normal?). I can't hear any major vacuum loss from a leaking hose.

3. I feel much harder shifts in the transmission and that concerns me about damaging anything... am actually wondering if returning home with the car will be ok?

I have called the local MB dealer and they don't carry the vacuum pump in inventory. Listed at 818$ CA! No other MB dealer seems to have one in Canada. I am now in Qc City btw and usually in the Montreal area.

Any help or clues will be deeply appreciated! Are there repair kits for these pumps, in case that's the problem?

I will try the search button a little more later on and stay in a hotel for the night. I'll try mbbraingears.com as well.

Many thanks in advance,

Bye,

The local auto wreckers may be able to help out at a reasonable price. You could call around in the morning. The new price for the part sucks. (no pun intended). I imagine you could check on line parts suppliers to see if a rebuild kit is available tonite. With todays type of carriers you might be able to get one day shipping to your local from almost any north american location. Sad when something like this happens. Best of luck. .

If you go to Fastlane (top of this page) you can find a new pump cheaper:

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1CQ0J3JZ41SR1A6G3G&year=1992&make=MB&model=300-DT-003&category=All&part=Diesel+Vacuum+Pump&appEngines=_any

Give them a call to see about overnight delivery.

Other than that, try the local salvage yards where you are. Hopefully someone will have a used one available.

That's the pump I need.

But here is the situation with Fastlane:

Quoted from another thread dated 2 feb. 2006:

Sorry, US only.
Fastlane no longer sells outside the US. Too many problems.

I've tried Altrom with no luck. So I just need a shipping address in the US to be able to order from Fastlane...???

Good thing that Free Trade Agreement!

And I had no luck with the scrap yards. Still one to look at tomorrow.

I will drive her back home on Thursday, seems all right after all. Just the brakes that need extreme careful driving and good push on the pedal!

Thanks,

Well, I have replaced the vacuum pump last week. I bought it from Phil at Fastlane and got it delivered to me through a third address in the US. Ordered on a Tuesday morning and got it the same week on Friday afternoon in Montreal by UPS. I got charged the flat rate charge at 17,50$ US + a brokerage fee and GST tax for 64,40$ Cdn. Still, I have saved more than 200$ from the best price I found from the dealers. Thanks to Phil.

Sothe pump had really failed (I will post pictures later on).

If somebody, with the same vehicle as mine, experiences the same symptoms, I suggest the vehicle is not run anymore.

I have found the roller-follower assembly completely bent and broken, both springs were pushing against the "cam wheel" in the middle of the fuel injection pump sproket. All components showed quite a bit of wear from rubbing against that sproket. I have ended up with some steel rash in the casing (and God knows how much has run into the engine before getting trapped by the oil filter). The worse is that I seem to be missing two little pieces which would have held the follower wheel in place... I can only see them sitting either in the timing chain front cover or the sump...

Hope this can be of some help for future references.

Bye,

Car has 330k miles (showing 530 000km in fact). So I would imagine this is due to fatigue more than anything else?

With the new one in, everything is back to normal!

Bye,
