How many hours to pull the tranny?

I have to put a new front seal on my 300SDL tranny and I was considering having it rebuilt while it's out. However, if removing the tranny doesn't take too long (haven't decided how long too long is) then I might just do the seal and wait for the tranny to go out before rebuilding. Also, while I have the tranny out, any suggestions for what other items should be replaced? I seem to remember reading about a flex disc and having the flywheel resurfaced.

No reason to have the flywheel resurfaced on an automatic.

I'd consider pulling the front pump out and replacing the bushing. It's really easy and the bushing wear is usually what makes the seal leak in the first place.

Where is the front pump? Inside the tranny?

yes. The seal is pressed into the front pump, staring right at you as soon as you lift the torque converter from the trans. It's bolted
to the case, it cannot be missed.

Working with a jack and a couple of stands, does one need to buy a tranny support lift or whatever to put under the tranny as it's being unbolted and such? Not that I'm planning to do it, but I'm curious to know what the procedure is for a job like that.

You do not have to remove the exhuast on the 603 equiped cars. Trans cooler lines are attacted with banjo type bolts and simply unscrew. I pluged the ends with corks to prevent dirt from getting inside.

It took me 4 hrs 10 minutes to remove an engine/tranny, rear differential, and driveshaft out of a '83 300d today. Probably could have done it in 3 but I was giving some lessons today to a guy that is interested in doing this kind of work.

Yeah, the banjo bolts are great. You bend a metallic cooler line even slightly as you remove the trans and then your two, 2 minute banjo bolts take 30 mins each to refit.
So on the diesels, the exhaust doesn't run below the prop shaft like it does on the V8? That would save 20 mins in removal and 40 mins refitting at least. The engine pipes on the v8 a difficult to refit because there is very little room on the drivers side between the header and the steering box and of course your hand is just that little bit too big to fit in and hold the bolt while someone puts the socket with 3 feet of extension and a uni-joint on it from underneath.

Does anyone have the benz times for trans removal on m116 vs m603 to compare? Gilly maybe?
Just for curiosity's sake.

Like Deniss, I am not looking to do this kind of job any time soon. My question is.... coupled with a good 6 hours to remove the tranny how much time is really involved in doing a basic rebuild. My tranny leaks only when in reverse and at the moment its not worth pulling it for me, but at some point im sure it will be.
