Manual Tranny, suggestions?

Changing into second seems to grind a bit if I dont let it sync up. New syncros? Or perhaps a minor adjustment in linkage?

Anyone had one of the rebuilt? How much did it cost ya?

Bad synchros. My 115 started doing the same thing right after my son jammed the 1-2 shift.

I'm interested in the cost as well. It grinds into second and sometimes third if I do it too fast or revv the engine high in the lower gear.

What oil goes into those trannys? The reason I ask is on Jetta's that used to happen all the time and if the owner could not afford to repair it proporly we would use GM synchromesh fluid and that would solve the problrem for a long time. It might be worth a try.

likewise thought on fluid. when i purchased my manual 240d, it had hypoid fluid in the tranny. and i had trouble shifting. drained and as per advice found here, replaced with mobil 1 motor oil. no longer a problem with the synchros.

yeah, when they get a bit of wear, a heavier oil will breath life into tired synchros. i think too, sometimes people just put in oil that is too thin and that causes a problem.

on my 82 240 with 250k it was wanting to graunch a bit so i drained it and put in 15w40 rotella. problem solved.

folks here recommend synthetic oil in stick trannies but i think often that is a mistake. the synchros are designed for a particular viscosity of oil and too thin makes them not work as well.

also giving it a moment between gears works wonders too. speed shifting works them unnecessarily.

My Euro car has the same problem. Redline MTL made it about 80% better.

Great suggestions. Mine also grinds if I don't shift exactly the way it likes. But I hadn't driven a stickshift for over 5 years, plus the old Mercedes like slower shifts than modern cars (I remember this from my uncle's 220D) so it took a few weeks to get used to. I also double-clutch downshifts now. I get nice smooth shifts as long as I'm paying attention, although it feels a little "notchy" when cold.

So, is Redline MTL the fluid of choice? Is it synthetic? I've seen it mentioned on other posts. I'm planning to change the fluid soon. MB says Dexron ATF...is it advisable to use Mercon/Dexron III like I use in my Ford w/ auto transmission? What's this about using synthetic motor oil? I know enough not to use "gear lube" but what would be the correct "weight"?

Redline MTL wasn't even dreamed of when the manual was written. Nevertheless, MTL is an accepable substitute.

The fluid I'm thinking of is really thin like atf. The part no. is something like 1234565 you can't miss it if you see it on the shelf in a dealership. It works wonders!
