240 headlamp upgrades -- would these work?
http://tinyurl.com/nz8kh
It isn't clear to me whether they are selling a *pair* for $40, because the photo shows two, while the language in the ad says "lamp" (singular). Nevertheless, this appears to me to be the animal we see on the http://www.jaimekop.com/240D/lights site. Thanks for any wisdom! Chuck |

It says "Includes one headlamp."
That's a good price for a Hella lamp, although that looks like the DOT-approved model with the glass lens and bulb shroud. I'd recommend looking for the Hella with the lexan (plastic) lens. While the DOT-approved Hella is much better than a sealed-beam lens, the lexan model is even better, and costs the same. I just looked at the second site. He says that they're "flat lens" would would be the lexan model, but they do appear to still have the bulb shroud. Perhaps they started using them on all the 7" lamps. Still, the lexan model works much better. While not DOT-approved, nobody checks your headlights for compliance unless you get silly with them. |

How "plug and play" are these? Does any new wiring have to be done or any other modifications?

If you stick with 55/60W bulbs, they should work fine in all but the oldest cars, with no modification. The H4 bulbs plug right in to the sealed-beam socket.

Just to toss this out, a year ago I upgraded from sealed beams to Autopal H4 conversions. Autopal is an indian company, but I found the quality to be quite high, rivaling that of recent Hella and Bosch things I've seen (honestly, the Bosch lamps are probably made in India now too, like their nozzles...). The glass lenses are good and sharp, and they are a drop-in install. You need to make modifications if you want to use the city lights, but that is optional.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/7-H6024-6014-H4-EURO-STYLE-HEADLIGHTS-WITH-CITY-LIGHTS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33710QQitemZ7939052880QQtcZphoto The guy offers a bunch of little options, like city lights, or no city lights, or blueish bulbs, or regular bulbs, or whatever, but the basic Euro Style lights work great, and cost the same as a set of replacement Sealed beams. They've got a really good light pattern (very flat and sharp, with a 'kick up' at the right side for illuminating signs. Very nice. Anyway, just wanted to mention it as a much cheaper alternative for people who wanted to try out the whole H4 thing. peace, sam

I bought those Bosch e-codes from Fastlane a while back. They work beautifully when compared to the stock units. I eventually went for the square eurolamp look though.

Euro lamps are FAR superior, even the knockoff ones are decent quality.

It's probably better than stock, but I can say from experience that the lexan Hella lamps are just plain great. Well worth the money.
The glass Hellas are also much better than sealed-beam DOT lamps. Somewhere in between. I wouldn't expect nearly as much from a non-european company as from Hella. Theirs are well worth $40 each. Your eyes will thank you. |
