AC working fine...and then...

The AC on my 84-300d turbo was working great until two days ago. Then the belt would occasionally squeal. Today, it squealed every 5 minutes or so and then there is a horrible clunking sound coming from around the compressor. I turned off the AC and the sounds stopped. The belt is still on, but is a little loose (but not THAT loose).

Any suggestions...?

Don

Have a friend briefly engage the compressor while you listen. If it's shot (it certainly doesn't sound good), you'll want to replace the dryer, expansion valve and flush the evap and condensor.

I had the exact same sound and it turned to be my belt.

Well, it can't hurt to try adjusting the belt, but "horrible clunking sounds" are usually a bad sign when coming from compressors.

Now, the compressor is not turning on...

Now, the compressor is not turning on... The belt feels good and looks good. The general fuse is fine. Is there a relay(s) to check?

Can I change the compressor, as a medium level diy-mechanic? Also, if I have to change things, what and how much?

Thanks, to everyone.

Don

You can change the compressor, but it will take more effort than most parts.

First take it to a friendly local AC shop and have the system evacuated and the refridgerant reclaimed. Then do the repairs (including flushing and installing a new dryer) and take it back for a recharge.

You'll save a lot of money by doing part of it yourself.

Compressor is officially shot...

I had the compressor checked and it is a goner. Now, the only compressors for this 84-300D on Ebay is a used one, not a rebuilt one. What do you guys suggest? The cheapest rebuilt I have found is around $150.

Also, the tutorial on DieselGiant is good...but I don't want to ruin something. Any last suggestions before I have this baby sucked of R12 and get to it? What do I have to really watch out for?

Thanks,

Don

I would go new, rebuilt, then as long last resort used. I would rather get one local as opposed to eBay....I have/get a bad one, I wanna be able to get in front of someone, not mess around with emails.

Used? What are you getting? You HAVE a used one now, like it??

My 2 cents worth of info and worth every penny. ;-)

This is one of the most common compressors ever used. They have them (both new and reman) at Napa, Autozone, Advance Auto, and probably everywhere else. I just bought a reman at Advance Auto for $108 + $10 core. 1 year repalcement warranty.
