Right Hand Drive 5 speed

If I were able to get my hands on a right hand drive w123 5 speed, is it possible to re-fit it to work in a left hand drive car? I haven't seen it discussed here and I would assume it is possible but I don't really know. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Best to have a LHD parts car but given that this is California, how about finding a suitable host for the engine and transmission?

You might need to keep it non-turbo if you want RHD. No room for the turbo with the steerng linkage on the right.

I'd think it would be far less work to transfer the title of that car to my name so you don't have to worry about it.

Finally... an idea more crazy than me putting a 5-speed in the 190D.

Seriously... nearly every junk yard I called asked "WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THAT?"

I think having a RH drive benz would be very cool (except for toll booths).

I don't think he's asking about converting the car to RHD. But instead, wondering if the 5-speed from a RHD car will work on a LHD car... Cant see why it wouldn't.

I would be willing to bet that converting a LHD Mercedes to a RHD Mercedes is impossible. The cowling sheet metal is all wrong for the steering column and HVAC. RHD vehicles would need a cowl/firewall that was something like a mirror image of the LHS car.

Yea I was just asking about the transmission. Converting the entire car would just be silly. I didn't think MB would make a special right drive transmission for those few countries that need them, rather just different linkage.

Shift patterns are the same on RHD and LHD so the linkage is probably the same.

The RHD car is more valuable.

Sell it to a postal delivery employee.

Did they manufacture the RHD cars in South Africa?

I disagree,............. I have just come upon information that indicates "that transmission will cause a LHD Mercedes to catch fire and/or explode". Send me the transmission and I will see that it is sent back to England, no charge to you.

Left hand/right hand

One of the hardest things (for me) in adapting myself to English driving was the gearshift. As others have indicated, the shift pattern is the same, it's just that you've gotta do it with your left hand. It would have been easier for me if the pattern had been a mirror image of the LHD pattern. I just couldn't seem to make my hand move the correct way.

But yes, get that 5-speed out and into a LHD car. You should be able to take the shifter and linkage and all. Not sure of the clutch linkage, that may take some imagination. By the way, I suspect that the LHD car's engine will need a pilot bearing installed for the clutch and I don't know what that will entail (advice, anyone?). Then put an automatic in the RHD car and sell it to a rural delivery person, as Ken300D suggests.

A simpler solution might be to keep the car and become a rural delivery person yourself.

Jeremy
