115/300d fan

My son and his 300d are 150 miles away and the fan clutch has gone out. Does anyone know if the clutch can be removed and bolted directly to the water pump pulley? I realize that this will space the fan back from the radiator by 2 inches or so but I don't think that this will be a problem. There is not a hope in hell of me buying a new clutch from MB and driving 300 miles to install it, but if the fan can be bolted to the pulley he can do that part of it.

Thanks for any help.

maybe.

i once bought a spacer from the auto supply place for putting on in place of a clutch. i never used it so i cant comment on how it works. maybe he can get one of those and try it out.

a solid 240 fan might work too. but they have a lot less blades on them.

As long as he doesn't have to drive in slow traffic (and the weather isn't too hot), I would just go ahead and remove the fan and clutch and drive it home. At highway speeds, that fan doesn't really do much.

yes this will work too. i think he will need some washers or nuts to space the bolts. they will not screw in enough to tighten without the fan in there otherwise.

i once took my fan out of my 300dt as an experiment and drove it that way for a good while.

Right, they will contact the waterpump if washers or shorter bolts are not used.

My local parts shop has spacers but I think that they are mostly for US cars. I can't think that they would have one for a MB.

Thanks for the comments.

i think you will find that the spacers are generic with four slotted holes.

i wont guarantee they will work for you but i think there is a good chance they will.

If you have the 5-blade aluminium fan and end up solid mounting it, do not run the engine above 3500rpm. The metal fan cannot withstand the forces and might break apart.
