'85 300D Blower/Window/Brake problems & questions!
Hey there, I'm fairly new here. New to posting but by no means new to the forums... I've got a few problems to address that are really bugging me and I need some help here.
---- I'm in the process of discussing a price for a nice 1985 300D I'm looking to buy very shortly Great interior, exterior, and engine. No rips in the seats, wood trim is in great condition, paint is great and just about everything else is seriously pristine. Garage kept, offered at $3500. Here are her quirks though- 1.) The passenger and rear passenger windows don't like to go up or down all the time. I don't think the rear window moves at all, while I know the passenger window will go down and up at a good steady speed all the way, and then just crap out and not want to go anywhere for 15 minutes until it feels like it. I'm not sure what that is... 2.) I have no blowers in the car, heat/vent/ac: None of it will function reliably. The man says it blows when it feels like it (may have been shy in front of me, I didn't see it) and will blow strong. I don't know what the problem could be there and some help would be cool. 3.) The car needs two new roters and four new sets of pads- I'm wondering how much that would cost. 4.) Antenna won't go up or down, it's seized in place I guess but it's up and that isn't a problem for me- reception is fine. The reason I am asking these questions is because being 17 (and a devout fan of these cars!), I as many other 17 year olds aren't the richest. I would like to know what kinds of problems the blower situation may be- AND, how much I might be able to knock off the offered price of $3500 for the condition of the other malfunctioning parts. I'm looking to bring this car down to a reasonable price for the both of us and to do so, I'm going to present how much it would be to fix these parts to the seller and subtract that from the $3500. Aside from that.... The car is a dream to drive! I love it! Any suggestions or feedback would be great! |

Those of us who haven't been 17 for a lot more than 17 years aren't necessarily rich either. We do as much of our own work as we can. Good mechanics are unfortunately very expensive and they always seem to have the most expensive parts sources.
1) If you can get a window to work even a little bit, then the motor (the expensive part) is probably OK and the trouble may be (a) lack of grease, (b) old grease turned to amber, (c) dirty switch contacts. That is a problem you can learn how to fix yourself. You should shake your head sadly and mutter something about the cost of window motors and knock the price down $500. 2) The blower problems may be due to worn brushes, which can be replaced with a little work. Do a search for "fan motor." The factory gets almost $500 for the fan assembly, by the way, so you can knock the price down for that. 3) I don't have a clue as to the cost of pads and disks but someone here will know or you can click on the "Buy Parts" link at the top of the page. You may be able to learn to do this job yourself. Knock the price down at least $500. 4) The antenna may need just a new mast or may need to be completely replaced. Mine is occasionally a little sticky. I use a light oil and run it up and down a bunch of times, wiping off any black crud as it appears. Jeremy
