Maximum market value 240D 125,000 miles
Maximum market value 240D 125,000 miles.
This is a Texas Body. Forward hood hinge pivots ripped out of body. Head reworked 500 miles. Steering/Suspension needs work = tie rods, ball joints, upper control arms, and idler arm. I drove this car two hours, went to 83 MPH and held steady (flat ground with no wind). Owner is asking $5,000.00 USD. Seeking opinions.

So, why do folks rework heads then dump the car? Quote:

The scariest detail of all. ![]() No info on AC, on standard vs automatic, paint, interior, etc..... But enough info to determine $1500 max if there are other positive bullet points not mentioned.....

I still think it would have to be pretty much perfect to bring $5K. I would start with $5K and subtract the cost of everything that needs to be fixed. I would guess that you will end up in the $3-4K ballpark.
I paid about $3K for my wife's 240D (200K miles) with a 9/10 interior and exterior. All it needed was a AC seal leak fixed and recharge (about $500) and a few little nits. It will probably cost me another $2K to make the body/paint perfect (just a couple of very minor parking lot dings I haven't gotten around to yet). If you pay $5K, you will be into it for about $6-7K by the time you get it perfect. |

The owner has been smoking crack cocaine and is looking for somebody with even poorer judgement to buy his car.

Even with fairly low miles, it would have to be pretty close to perfect to bring $5K. This one sounds like it could need a couple of $1000 of work. BTW, why did the car need the head done after only 125K miles?

Answer:
The owner had a compression and leak down test done, three valves where not seating correctly = economy and power loss.
As I understand, all valves where replaced with new. |

My 240D with 130K on it is for sale for $1500. Got a deposit on it already at that price but I would never ask more. Its got busted AC and a bit of rust in the rear floor. Aside from that it runs great. And still I wouldnt ask more than $1500. For 5k that guy must live on Fantasy Island.

well put. owner needs rehab. and a slap in the head. not to gloat, but I just bought a 84 300D- owner was asking $2500. I offered $1700- then drove ...so long story short, I inspected it thoroughly, and I found that a car with a 9/10 body and interior, 1 owner, but in desperate need of driveshaft work, cruie control work, an A/C evaporator AND conversion + other little bs = $1K or no thanks. So I plan to put in $2K into this car with mechanical/body/mods that it will be worth what the state taxes it's worth at- $3250. I'd walk away and never look back. ![]() |

BTW, if you're talking about converting the AC to 134a, you will probably regret it.
