Removing the motor mount "mini struts"

I'm pulling the motor out of my donor car and I'm all done except for the mini struts on both sides of the motor. These are the little struts that are by the motor mount. I guess they are there to dampen the engines movement.

The Clymer manual says to hold the little rod down with a wrench while turning the 10mm bolts on the underside of the struts. I see that the littl rod on the strut is slotted to accep a wrecng but I can find th right size to fit it on.

Anybody know the right size wrench to hold that rod down ?

If you don't plan on using them, use a pair of vice grips to keep the shaft from spinning.

The engine shocks use the 7mm if memory serves.

My smallest metric wrench is an 8mm and I was trying SAE wrenches with not succes. Will buy a 7mm and 6mm tomorrow.

I need to use them because that combo is going into my clean w123.

7mm is it. I had to spray mine with brake cleaner to find the flats, but they were there.

Vice grips adjusted properly will hold the shock from spinning without crushing the shock. I am removed and installed mine a few times this way without damage. The key is to tighten the grips until they just start to bite and get a grip. They don't need to be super tight.
