Thump sound when i put it in reverse 83 300d turbo (w123)
When I put the car in reverse it makes a loud click or thump noise any suggestions? Axle maybe?

maybe axle, or the u joint, or flex disc's, or rear end play, or driveshaft spline play, or?
get under there (safely) and wiggle the drive shaft around. look at your axle boots. wiggle your axles. you will find it. my spline has some play, and it clunks a little. just dont back up.

My TD does the same thing. I have a little backlash in the rear. Seems to be worse when I put it in reverse while facing downhill.
Its been doing it for the last 30K miles so I'm not going to worry about it for a while. Cheers, Bill
