Question Diesel Fuel Filler Cap confusion

I am getting conflicting information from two different dealerships on which fuel cap is correct for W210 turbodiesels. I compared the fuel cap on my 1999 E300d to another (1998) E300d this weekend and found the caps are different.
  • The 1998 car has a fuel cap with P/N 140 470 00 05 (no tether, no rotating collar).
  • My 1999 car has a different cap with P/N 140 470 03 05 (rotating collar, rubber tether line).
  • Just for comparison, our 2002 E320 wagon has P/N 215 470 01 05 (rotating collar, rubber tether line). This fuel cap looks virtually identical to the cap on my 1999 car.

I went to the dealer yesterday and they insist the 1998 car already has the correct fuel cap (no tether, no rotating collar) and my 1999 car has the wrong fuel cap.

Can anybody help ID these various caps?

Thanks.

My 1999 has the tether. Though the cap actually had a 9-98 date on it. Car is 11-98 if I recall.

I need to replace mine it weeps, wonder how much fuel I am looking out the back end.

My 99 has a cap with a (broken) tether. Manu date was 7/98 if I remember correctly.

As long as it keeps the fuel in the car is all that should matter, isn't it? My old 300CD had a BMW cap that a PO stuck on there , I lived with it for many years until I got a MB cap on there...

Terry and rambow, thanks for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it.

Can somebody with a 1998 diesel check in and let me know what's fitted to their car?

Thanks.

Is it conceiveble the 1998 and 1999 cars require a different cap

the only thing i really know is that a chevy diesel needs a vented cap or it runs like poop i assume (ass_of_u_and_me) that is true of all diesel vehicles

Yes, that makes sense. I clearly recall the stories of people fitting a gasser fuel cap to a diesel and the car stopped running.

You are right. The correct one comes with NO tehter. I went thru the same stuff myself and gave the dealership the part number that came off the car and got the tether.

Maybe MB did one of there part updates? Is 140 470 00 05 still availible? What does the dealer get with that part number?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was replaced with 215 470 01 05.

That is exactly what I was thinking, I know when i've replaced parts in the past, many of them were updated parts with different numbers. I would think having a filler cap, with a tether is the way to go, since it can be easy to misplace a cap, and drive off with forgeting to put it back on...

That is just it. My cap was from a gas car or so it said.

What I do know is that in 2000 the W210 changed a lot, and MB stopped carrying parts for things that were updated. Like the dome light for example.

If that old part number is put into the dealers computer, it should either pop up as good, or get bounced to a new part number.

So, does the non-tethered cap have a holder built into the door? Does the tethered cap not have a holder built into the door?

If this is so, does that mean it was cheaper to have a tethered cap, than to have a non-tethered cap with a door holder; and Roger Smith told them to go for it?

Edit: I see by the pics on page 2, that there is a tether and a cap holder. The tether is for those who can't figure out what the capholder is for? I for one do not want any of my caps dangling around, getting fuel all over the paint.

Now I've looked at the part number.

My 1999 car a P/N 140 470 03 05 (rotating collar, rubber tether line), same as what yours shows. Probably is the original one for both of us. Why are you looking at changing yours?

Mine always leaks, put a new gasket on, leaks less. Guess I should just buy another one and see if that helps.
