Can sway bracket be split?
I'm trying to muster the courage to change the sway bar bracket (bushing) on my 123. The old one is split down the side. New one is solid. I'd rather not rip the entire front end apart to do this. Can I simply slice the rubber bracket, so I can easily slide it on? Has anyone else done this?

Front sway bar, of course!

On my W126 my new one was already split on one side, like a sandwich. It made installation simple. Once it's all bolted back down I don't see what it would hurt that one side has a slice through it.

Yeah, that's my thinking. I'm just hoping no one chimes in with a strong warning against splitting it myself.

Did the bushings non my 82 300TD. Did not split them. I used spray silicon on the sway bar and slid them into position. At the time I was rebuilding the entire front end. The plastic piece that closes the sway bar opening will come off and allow the bushing to slide into position.
The job is easier if you remove the brake booster and battery tray. Be ready to treat the battery tray and area below the tray for rust. POR 15 works great. Also have the necessary gaskets for the booster and master cylinder. It can be done without removing the brake booster but I found it more work and frustration than removing the booster. Dave

double check your new bushing, i remember when I did mine I thought I was going to have to slide them on from the ends and even took one of the upper control arms off to do this- then looked closer at the bushing and realized it was split already!
even if yours aren't, theres no harm in splitting them the way the old ones were. theyre held in pretty good.

Nope, definately no split in it. How hard is it to get the upper control arms off?

I split mine when I did it last year... no problems. Figure it would be fine since the factory one was like that. It was pretty hard to split it with my knife Very solid rubber.

Upper control arms are a piece of cake. I think it took longer to get the car jacked up and wheels off than it took to get the arms off.
