top radiator hose collapses

on my 87 300D after sitting over night--is this a sign of head gasket problem. No oil in water or water in oil or overheating. Radiator cap is new, engine runs smooth--
thanks
Joel

How is the coolant level? Also, when was the last time the hose was changed?

The hose collapse is from a vacuum created by temp difference. Water does not compress, but steam will, and as steam condenses, the pressure decreases to the point that atmospheric pressure is greater than the pressure inside the hose, resulting in a collapse. A waek hose or low coolant level is usually the culprit.

CSX had a tank car collapse after workers steam cleaned the interior, during cold weather, and did not vent the car to keep the pressure even. The car collapsed like an aluminum can. I can send you a picture of it.

I'd love to know the dimensions of that tank. Hmmm.... 14 PSI times 144 times the area of the tank in square feet...

More correctly, that's the power of atmospheric pressure.

Mentioned those pictures to my boss yesterday. Apperently that was caused by removing fuel from the bottom of the car and not venting at the top. Those pics were emailed around to all the foreman to let them know what could happen.

Cool photos!

In answer to the original question, most of the time the vent on the radiator cap is bad causing the hose to collapse because there is supposed to be a check valve vent that allows atmospheric pressure in when needed.

You didn't mention the brand/type of cap you bought, but make sure you get the right one, from the dealer if necessary, they are relatively cheap.

Try another brand new good quality cap and see if that does the trick. You may have just gotten a bad one, that has been known to happen.

Does it vent from the engine bay or through the overflow tank in the fender? Could it be a clogged or pinched line to the overflow tank?
