WD, sounds like you have a weekend project going.......
HitMan, the wiring under there is mind boggling. I'm gonna start in on some wire tracing. Got engine out this evening. Pics to follow.....

That's the best way... start with the obvious crap and get a big pair of wire cutters out.

Not too busy of a day today.
I got the console pulled out. Then I pulled the shifter. Found a narly looking little spider up inside the shifter..... Then I went ahead and pulled the dash out. Gets easier every time, but getting it back in is always the "fun part".
I've got a whole lot of wire tracing to do though...... Jeeze.......
I also need to go back and read up on Daves writeup on pulling the evap assy's. I hope to give the 300D manual AC controls. Gonna try and take a look at the wiring first, but we'll see. Skeetahs chased me into the house again.

Request: While you have the dash off, could you see if it's possible to alter the airflow route to get heat through the center vents?

...and document how the stock vents are routed? I don't get any air out of any of my vents due to some creative vent re-routing that was done when an aftermarket AC was installed. I was thinking when I fixed it I could make it so heat comes out all 4 vents.

I thought you were swapping in the manual controls from the 240D.

I used my old '44 Ford 2N in a similar fashion a few years back. I attached a cheap boom pole to the three point hitch and dropped the engine and transmission into an '84 Jetta--worked great. An engine leveller really helps with the minor angle changes required. I might try it again with my little Iseki diesel tractor, if needed.

I am. Printed out Dave's evap replacement thread at the office yesterday. 142 pages!! Good stuff, but WAY more of a project than the drive train swap......

You certainly upgraded tractors. I had an 8N, and to this day is my favorite motorized object to date. It had such personality. Now, it would beat you to death to mow with, but I loved that tractor.
The Ford diesel is 100 times better, just without the personality.......

Yeah-

I did the boom pole engine hoist bit a few years back with my 70 Spitfire and a Case 530D tractor I had at the time. I wonder how long it took my ex-wife to wreck that old Case (sigh)? That Case was my intro to the diesel world.

Jimmy- hats off to you. You got a tiger by the tail there.

Rick

Well. we dragged the 300D out of the "staging" area, and I 'drove' the 240D down in front of the garage Saturday.
I unhooked the fuel lines, and made an incredible mess. finally I hooked the fuel line from the supply to the return. duh!!
I then drained the radiator (promptly broke the drain screw and had to remove the lower hose.) Then I removed the block drain bolt and you can't even imagine how much fluid comes out of the block. WOW! Also, you can't imagine how easy it is to get to the screw on a 240D. Pic included below.
Then I just pulled the headlight assemblies, front bumper 'flaps', and aux fan.
Actually the project is currently on hold, as I am emailing with someone that has a 240D with a bad engine. Sure would be easier to just slap a motor in there!! We'll see if it can get down to my price range, which is notoriously low out of necessity......

pic of drain hole. Kinda nice without a turbo cluttering the space up. And also getting in the way of my whopping 67hp (give or take a horse or two...)
Oh, and I also found out my little Manilla beige 240D started life as Astral Silver Metallic. It was a fairly thorough repaint whenever it was done. See paint code 735.
