124 OVP relay - is replacement urgent?
my 93 300d has the intermittent symptom of needing a new OVP relay (201 540 3745), ie - ABS light comes on, rough idle, then randomly returns to normal.
Is this something I should do ASAP, or is it the kind of thing that can wait. What would happen if the OVP relay failed altogether? thanks dan |

It could be the OVP relay or the voltage regulator. If you lose the OVP relay completely, you'll have poor idle and no AC until you fit a new one. Basically what you're experiencing intermittently now. If you lose the voltage regulator completely you'll run down your battery pretty quickly. If things like AC blower and headlights aren't phased when the ABS light comes on then your diagnosis of OVP relay is probably accurate.
The innards of the OVP relay can be resoldered. I'd try that given the intermittent nature of the problem. Sixto ... stay tuned |

OK, Im back a few months later with an update, a dead battery, and more questions...
1 - the intermittent symptoms described in my first post (abs/srs lights, weak idle, no tach) came and went but never stayed for more than a few minutes. 2 - a few weeks back I started using my car battery to power a 12v fuel pump, I left the car running while I did this. 3 - yesterday, while driving home from the mall, the abs/srs lights came on, power started to dim on headlights, windows, radio, and the idle was really weak, and the battery ran dead while I limped home. I guess this isnt the OVP now? Did the 12v pump kill the voltage regulator? I have a volt meter, what tests should I perform to track down the exact problem? thanks for reading. |

Remove the voltage regulator (2 Philips head screws on the back side of the alternator) and inspect the brushes. If both brushes aren't shiny then there probably isn't good contact with the armature. The springs are only so long and can't apply enough pressure when the brush material thins beyond a certain point. You can replace the brushes if you're a true DIYer or replace the voltage regulator.
Could be you drained the battery beyond the safe depth of discharge but I'd think a working alternator would have kept you going. Sixto 93 300SD |

sixto,
so i removed the cover on the back of the alt, then removed the two screws (flat head screw driver btw) over what I think is the voltage regulator (different numbers showing than the numbers on the volt reg from fastlane, which i already purchased). but then i was having a hard time removing it, it seemed like something else was holding it in place. i started to pry it out, but it started to bend and it felt like something was going to break if i forced it, so i stopped so i could go catch the train to work. Is there some trick to getting the volt reg out of the alt? thanks again dan |
