What's this?

What's this big white thingie?

Found in my 87 300D under the back seat, driver's side.

Has only a 3pin electrical connection (which for me wasn't connected). Plugged it in, nothing happened. (except for a typhoon in Japan).

No part numbers on it. What is it?

The only thing routed down that side is vacuum tubing as far as I remember. Some kind of electrical trunk release mechanism?

Old unit discontinued MB# 0008205026
Superseded MB# 1248201026 + MB# 001A0008204687
New unit Claims to be an eight pole connector, which makes me suspect there is a TSB wire harness conversion involved.

Best guess:
The sub harness was removed to prevent anyone from re-connecting it.
