HELP - modulator replacement in progress - can't seem to seat it right
hey all,
trying to replace my transmission vacuum modulator on my 82 300D (722.3 trans) right now. -i am replacing the red pin behind the modulator -took old one out -new one doesn't seem to seat all the way in. how far in is it supposed to go? right now it still sticks out a little bit. it feels like its not seated all the way, but ive pushed and twisted plenty, its not going in any further. -the old pin/mod was seated in there, but the pin was borken, hence the replacement -trying to put the mod in, it doesn't go in all the way either. i *think* its being stopped by the pin. I dropped the trans pan for better access. its making me nervous to have it open and working near it...should i put it back? any tips from people who have done this one before...please help... thanks dd

I went through a modulator replacement about three years ago. The tricky thing I found was to make sure and get all of the old pin removed. A pair of 90 degree needle nose did the trick.
How much is the new modulator sticking out? Have you compared the old pin pieces to the new one? Does it appear that you have it all? Where did you get the new pin? Sorry for all the questions but it sounds like there may be a piece still in there.

thanks SDBlue for the reply...
- i got the part from Phil @ fastlane. it matches what was in there, looks like it fits.
- i have all of the pin that was in there for sure. the only other possibility i can think of is that part of another old pin is in there (car is new to me, wasnt shifting right when i got it). but it really doesnt feel like it, and as much as i can see with my mirror it doesnt look like it. - the new modulator is about 3/8 to 1/2 in from seating all the way. the fit is really tight even up to that point. i really have to work it to get it in that far. i have put atf on the rubber gasket to help it out going in. maybe i just need to push it more? its even hard to twist it any more when its that 1/2" away from being seated. grr, this is frustrating...

There are different modulator/pin confugurations. Some of the modulators use a plastic pin. It sounds like you might have the wrong combination.

figured it out ... fingers crossed
my problem was that i didnt realize where the collar that holds the modulator to the tranny attached. It goes way behind the brass outer ring and hooks into the white part of the modulator - so the modulator does stick out a bit from what intuitively looks to be right.
instaling it back i got it to seat so there was a very minimal bend in the retained clip, and the modulator seems to be well seated. tomorrow will be judgement day to see if it works...
