Noise from transmission?

Tonight when I was out I put the car in drive to go and I heard what sounded like the starter grinding(although it clearly wasn't) , so I put it in neutral and the same thing then in park and again the same. The grinding noise wasn't happening when it was in gear but rather while moving it around through the gears then when it was put into only P or N there was a kind of wining noise almost like the noise you would hear if you slapped your trans into 1st while going to fast but much quieter, if the radio had to have been on I probibly woudn't have heard it. So I took off for work and when I arrived there the same things were happening. So I shut down the car and tried to make it hapen again without success. Any Ideas, I'm at the end of my rope with this car. Looks like she's getting a bath and storage for the winter if this keeps up.

Hello, Did you ever resolve your transmission issues?
I seem to be having the same issue with my car, A very quiet whirring sound when shifting into neutral or drive but not in any gear? I have just finished restoring vacuum to the transmission as prev. owner had them in the wrong places anyway making for some very harsh shifts. I have disconnected most vaccum lines except of course the trans. and clim. control. I left the egr line attached but it gets no vacuum any way. I also hooked up the overboost limiter valve. (I got from another car). One wire to the manifold switch and the other wire to an ignition source. vacuum lines (1 each) go to the banjo bolt and the alda. (also taken fom the donor car). 1980 300td wagon has turbo motor from (I think) 1984.
P.S Thanks to all that have helped to fix transmission problems. My car shifted horrible until I found how to disconnect the excess and leaking from the valve cover valves. I think that was Brian Carelton

1980 300 TD with retro fitted turbo motor

I wonder if I may have misadjusted the kick down cable?
