Axles : High Quality vs. Low Quality

There's much info about CV's and half-shafts that state the high failure rate of remanufactured half-shafts, but can anyone actually testify to this? It is stated that they won't last as long, but how long is that? Are we talking 10,000 miiles, or 100,000 miles? Any info is greatly appreciated.

I juggled with this same situation (we have the same car) and I really didn't feel like doing the same job a year down the road. I ended up getting CVJ axles rather than the Autozone specials. Since I did all of the labor (shop quoted me at 8 hours), I still came out ahead.

Olsalty. Thanks for the PM, that clears things up for me, and is only slightly higher than the other prices I found. I won't cheap out if CVJ is the way to go. How long have you had them? And did it actually take 8 hrs (both sides)? Thanks!

I got bad results with the boots on an axle at autozone... The boot bursted within a year.

On another car I had installed O'reilly reman axles and they are holding beautifully after 2 years and almost 20000miles.

Parts store axles i would say are mixed bag...O'reilly's were even cheaper than AZ. at just under 100 dollars a pop if they last more than 5-6 years i consider myself served . OEM at above 400 bucks is too expensive (OEM must last 25+years to be competitive as pay time!). It took me 3 hours to do both half-axles on W123's.

I put in new GKN/Lobro axles in the 1982 300D. They came from Performance Products and I snagged them under one of their 15%-off sales that they used to have.

This replacement axle uses a later design where the can unbolts (instead of crimps) so the future boot replacement will be simple.

These are now family heirlooms, to be handed down from car to car and never to be sold to a non-family member.

I have had them for almost two months now; obviously too early to give a longevity report.

I would say that it took about 4 hours start to finish for both sides. Since I have done the brakes and the shocks beforehand, I am aware of rear seat removal and such. I read the procedure somewhere else on this forum, so I had everything ready to go before I even started.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
