1987 300TD Vacuum Problem

Over a 2 day period the vacuum shutoff took longer and longer until now it does not shut off without manually moving the shutoff lever.

Using a MityVac (Harbor Freight $16.95) the shut off works perfectly with one or two pumps.

With the MityVac attached to the main line from the Vacuum Pump attached where the shut off line comes off, with the engine running, I show no vacuum at all.

The brakes seem to work perfectly, I have harsh shifts, and the climate control works but the center vents and the floor vents do not open.

Is is time to rebuild the Vacuum Pump?? It looks like I have the later version pump.

Any thoughts??

If the brakes work fine, the vacuum pump is ruled out as the culprit.

There should be vacuum off the main line. This must be resolved first. Check to see if the port where the shutoff line comes off the main line is clogged. Get a very tiny drill bit and carefully insert it manually with your fingers.

You are also failing to get any vacuum to the vacuum control valve on the IP that regulates the smoothness of the shifts.

Either one of the ports is plugged or one of the hoses has disengaged itself from the main line.

Thanks!!!!!

The main line to the shutoff was plugged. I ran the drill bit as you said and after a few turns it pushed through. The car shuts off the way it should again!!

The IP lines look ok but will check them later as family time has come for Sunday afternoon. I'll report back when I have tested the other lines.

Thanks again,

Joe.

That is especially nice as I don't think that you can rebuild the vacuum pump in a 603... or can you? It didn't seem like there were any serviceable parts in there.

I haven't seen a rebuild kit for the 603 pump.

There are other reasons to replace an original 603 pump. -
