Blown Lower Oil Cooler Hose on 83 300 SD, Now Won't Start

I have a 83 300SD and had the lower oil cooler line break last week. Got the engine stoped in time and think the bearings and crank are okay. However, the engine compartment was covered in oil and now that the hose is replaced and the oil mostly cleaned up, the car will not start. Is there some kind of relay that I might have soaked with oil and caused a short in the relay. Most of the oil went on the drivers side all the way back to the firewall.

The motor turns over and almost seems to start, but just can't get going. Each passing day I try and start it , it seems to be getting closer to starting. So at some level the motor is getting some fuel and spark, but lacking sufficent quantites of one or both.

Two things that I noticed is that I don't hear the fuel pump run when I turn the ignition on (however, I don't ever recall hearing before it broke down). Should I hear the fuel pump buzz?

Also, it seems that the glow plug buzzer doesn't buzz anymore (however, once again, I always looked at the glow plug light and assumed that there was always a buzz before).

I am new to this board and so go easy on me. I live in Plano Texas and wanted to know if there is someone that might be able to help me or can point me to a good shop to turn to. Thank you in advance.

Will

Your fuel pump is mechanical, so you won't here it. Also, it won't activate until trying to start. First thing first, make sure you are getting glow; make sure you are getting fuel. If you're getting both, time top pull the valve cover. In that case, it could be compression related.

He has great write ups.

Also, when was the last time you changed your filters? Also did your engine shutoff vacuum line under the hood get disconnected?

I live about an hour east of Plano.

RRGrassi. Thanks for the info.

I will check to see if the engine shutoff vacuum line is connected.

Once question, where is this line?

Also, do you work on these cars?

I am new to having a MB car, so pardon my little knowledge, but what chassis models is this car 116, 123, 126 or 201?

Thanks for all your help. I guess one of the benefits of owning a MB is the networking help other owners give you

I went to the http://www.dieselgiant.com
site, do you have to buy his DVD's or is there a text version of the repair for GP that I cannot find?

Your car should be chassis 116. I have a 123.

If you look under the hood, the engine shutoff is the one marked "STOP". One the 123 and 126, it is a brown line. I do not know what color it is on the 116.

I do work on my car. I took auto mechanics in High School just so I could do my own repairs. I do like turning wrenchs, but I do not do it for a living. I graduated from HS a year after my car was made. Then I stuffed 4 years into 4 1/2 for college.

It is the first MB diesel I have owned. They are really quite easy to work on. Some things can be a pain, but my 82 model 123 is MUCH easier to work on than my '73 Pontiac or '77 Chevy PU ever was.

Networking is a great thing, and it is hard to find a good mechanic that has experince with these cars. You are better of learning these cars, because only you will make sure the job is done correctly. I can help out also.

I belieive your chassis is a 126. The 116 ended production in 1980. 1981 throug 91 the S class was 126.

Yes, his is the 126. DUH!!! I just got through drooling over the black 116. Sorry!

So, the fuel shutoff vac line is brown on your car, it also has the OM617.95x engine.

Since you say oil got all over the driver's side of the car, you very well may have messed up your glow plug relay, or at least blown its fuse. The relay is a black box on the front of the driver's side wheel bump. Here's a direct link to DieselGiant's glow plug repair page. This is what a glow plug relay looks like.
