300sd Turbo Question

I have an 85 300sd, unfortunately the turbo is not working very well so I either need a new turbo or rebuild the one I have. Before I go and rip everything out I was wondering if anyone knows what the sizes of the Inducer and Exducer are?

how many miles?
What are the symptoms?
What makes you think the turbo isn't working?
Did you do anything to the car? (tune up)

the car has 490,000 KM on it, the turbo is seized I know this because I tried to turn it by hand and it wont turn even with a lot of pressure when trying to turn it. I'm trying to figure out what the size of the inducer and exducer are because I might be able to get a holset turbo for a very good price and as long as the inducer is a similar size then I can go ahead and buy it.

You mean turbine and compressor? There is more to it than just the size. If you are not positive what you are doing I would stick with the stock unit.

I've have experience with turbo's I just need the sizes before I take everything apart because this is my daily driver and I cant use my other cars for winter driving, so if I can get the holset turbo to work with my car i'll buy that otherwise I will source another turbo thats why I need the specs.

I think you may be able to get a rebuild for around $300. I'm not sure though. Someone else with experience may chime in.

Do you have a 635?

Hey, could you please post a picture of your 635 CSI. I just bought one last year and have done a lot of work on it. Is yours a manual shift or auto....

Hello, 635, I dont have the specs on the inducer and exducer, I do know the diameter of the outlet is 2.25"

Also you should be aware that the SD's and D's could have come with 2 different turbos, A garrett T3 or a KKK 026, quoted numbers for rebuild were probably for the T3,

Im located just up the road from you in London, (2hrs) if you need any parts, im stripping an 85 300 SD, champagne ext, black int,

one of my 85's had the garrett, the other the KKK,

Email me off the board for more specs, i have my turbo rotated for a intercooler, its easily accomplished,

Oh the IIRC the turbo most suited for our applications i think was the HX30 from holset. however you are going to have to do some custom work to put anything other than a stock turbo in.

Us ontario diesel enthusiasts should stick together.

EDIT** I dont have any spare turbos at present, other than a T3/T4 hybrid

If you're pressed for time you should be more concerned with fitment compatibility than flow compatibility. Will the Holset bolt in place of a Garrett T3? Are the oil fittings the same and in the same place?

The Holset turbo does have a T3 flange so it should bolt on, but it will need minor modification for the intake, as far as oil fittings I can machine some adapters so thats no big deal, as for time I just cant have the car grounded for more then 2 days thats why I want to purchase everything before I take everything apart.
