testing a starter?

Is it possible to jump a starter with a battery to see if it is working, before it gets installed?(without causing damage is the main concern)

I bought a parts car with the starter in the trunk....would like to know if it works without installing it to find out it doesn't.

Okay, thanks....but can you do it yourself?

I prefer to "learn" rather than "have done for me"....

Sure you can test it. Using jumper cables, attach the - from the battery to the case of the starter and the + from the battery to the hot stud on the solenoid. Then-I use a screw driver-connect the hot stud or the jumper clamp to spade connector near it. Hold the starter down with your foot as it will want to jump around when it works.

Well that works.....took all of five minutes including going to the garage and finding my cables, and I now know I have a working starter that will get installed, instead of a dud that would only need removal again.

Thanks again.
