PLEASE HELP... URGENT starting

I'm at a loss. Did a search on bleeding air from fuel lines. here's what I have going on...

OM616 motor out of a 1980 240D - pencil glow plugs - using the tock mercedes gp relay with self-timer.

The motor is installed in a 1967 Land Rover. I have the wires from the glow plug relay going as follows (following the mercedes wiring diagram):

Main 12v lead to the positive side of my starter switch/starter.

Intact 80amp fuse

wire to switchable 12v post on my ignition switch (turn key to supply 12v to system)

wire to started side of starter switch to deactivate GP's upon pushing the starter button

ground wire

wire to GP indictor light on dash (successfully lights upon turning the key and goes out after 5-7 seconds.

*GP relay "clicks" on upon turning key.

My problem is that I'm not getting fuel to the injectors. The motor was running when I pulled it out of the 1980 240D. I installed the motor in the truck with new fuel lines from and to the tank, new prefilter, new spin-on fuel filter. I've primed the system with the hand pump and have fuel to both filters and feeding all the way back through the return back to the tank. When I cracked the steel fuel lines to the injectors to bleed the system, I only get fuel to the #4 injector - the other are apparently not getting fuel. I've cranked and cranked and cranked but still don't have fuel getting to the injectors. After talking to a very experienced mercedes tech at MBI motors here in portland he advised me to use a shot of ether i nthe intake mainfold and crank away. Funny thing is is that even with the ether the motor really doesn't fire over. It acts like it wants to a little then goes back to a "dry" crank. (he advised using some ether to fire the motor intermittently to help suck fuel up to the injectors, while they were still sealed, not cracked).

What am I missing, or what might be wrong?!

I have to get this thing started...

Any advise or tricks?

THANKS, and feel free to call for any advice if its easier! I'll check the post again in just a little bit.

THANKS

Did you try flooring the accelerator and crank it for a minute or a few?

Also you might want to try devert your lines to a separate fuel bottle like the one pictured to rule out any fuel line issues.

Also check to make sure the vacuum shut off valve it not the issue.

Crack the large bolt on top of the spin on fuel filter and pump the hand pump. Once you get fuel at the spin on filter tighten up the bolt and crack the nut that attaches the hard metal lines to each injector. Crank it several times and you should have fuel weeping at each injector. Tighten up the nuts and crank it and it should fire up.

Also use a test light to make sure that you have power to your glow plugs when you turn the key.

PM me if you don't get it running and I'll come take a look at it this evening. I'd like to see how it all went together.

You guys are great. Thanks for the responses.

I don't think I have a fule line issue coming from the tank as I'm getting fuel all the way thru the return line back to the tank. I might give the alterna-tank a try anyway if it comes down to it.

Bryan, I'll try cracking that big bolt atop the filter to bleed some air. That damn motor was running great when pulled, I don't know why I'd have a bunch of clogged lines now. There HAS tro be a big air pocket stuck in that injector pump somewhere. I just have to get it out. VERY frustrating. And I'll definitely test the gps with a test light. I don't know why I didn't think of that earlier! Atleast the relay seems to be working properly.

I'll post again soon after I give it another try. Stay tuned...

And Bryan, I might take you up on your offer of helping get this ugly thing started.

Thanks again, guys.

I have found the IP easier to bleed, if you remove the GP's so the motor can spin faster. open the injector lines at the injectors and spin the motor with the throttle 1/2 depressed, if you have no fuel tank issues, I bet that clears it up.

You could try pull starting it. It has solved other people's hard starting issues when an engine has sat for a while.

I've always used WD 40 to start mine after filter changes. I spray into the intake with the filter lid off. Spray while its cranking. 2 people!

The hands have been thrown up in the air... not in celebration, but in frustration. Still can't get fuel to #1 thru #3 injectors. I have fuel via the primer pump to the spin on (when i loosen the big nut on top of the spin-on and pump the primer, lots of fuel spilling out). I cracked the nuts at the injectors and crank away (~25 seconds at a time, then cool-down) but only have fuel coming out of the #4 injector.

I also used a test light light on the gp's and they have power, but the motor obviously still won't start without fuel. I got the motor to fire on a shot of ether finally, but it still wasn't enough to pull diesel through.

Any other ideas other than a big hammer?

Bryan, man if you can help me trouble-shoot this thing tonight that would be AWESOME! Let me know!

At this point I would hook up the tow strap if your in a place where you can do that.

negative on the tow strap stevo. I'll guess I'll head back and keep cranking away wit hthe injector nuts cracked. After reading some relevant archive info, it solunds like sometimes you just have to crank FOREVER to get air out of the IP.

Be back soon...

It takes about 12 seconds of cranking to get the fuel up to the injectors, which can seem like an eternity sometimes

don't forget to pull the GP's out! it doubles the RPM's of the motor, and cuts down on starter fatigue.
