Electrical Problem in 1995 e300 Diesel

Hello everyone,
My dad is having trouble with his car that just started recently. He tells me that whenever he touches the brake there is a power voltage reduction to part of the dashboard which sets off a buzzing sound and loss of gauges. Has anyone had a similiar problem with their car and how did they go about fix it. He told me that someone would attempt to trace the problem for ~$1000, is this a fair price. My dad thinks it might have been from heavy rains as he doesnt know what else could affect it.

Thanks for your help

Before I'd spend $1,000 on "tracing" the problem I'd throw some parts at it first in this instance.

I'd start with the brake switch mounted at the top of the pedal arm and then try a K40 relay if that didn't help.

Together they are ~$100 and both are very easy to install.

Sorry, was thinking of a 96 OM606 when i responded. Am not certain your 95 is the same in terms of electrical controls. I did not see it in the details where i expected to find it.

On the 96-99 it is located on the right firewall in the sealed box with the computer, etc. It sends power to numerous devices and fails/causes intermitent problems when the printed circut board develops cracks from expansion/contraction/age.

From a non-mechanic

I am a dangerous person to talk to when it comes to mechanic stuff, but I had some strange electrical problems, and fixed one of the by .... replacing what I thought were good fuses. I replaced the old pitted metal ones with new copper ones.

Hmmm.... I;m new to the 95 ( and MBz diesels) , jsut got one a month ago, but if it were me I would be checking the grounds that run the brake light themselves. a bad ground will do what he describes in any motorcar.
