Is low-sulfur killing my injection pump?
I'm dealing with getting my leaky injection pump (on my 98 E300TD 606.962) resealed and was told by a local (and well respected) diesel service center that the new low sulfur diesel would start to take a toll on my injection pump causing premature internal component failure.
I've been using RedLine diesel catalyst for years, but I'm now hearing that to replace the sulfur, that new formulations are needed. Anyone able to clarify?

Folks said the same thing when Low (LSD) came out, and again now with Ultra (ULSD).
The ASTM requirements for lubrication of the fuel remains in effect. ULSD diesel has different aromatics that dry out rubber parts; this is the probable cause of your DV failure in your other post. Mine leaked at xmas; ULSD came to CA in Oct/Nov i think.

Thanks Terry,
What one local shop told me was that my internal IP components would start to fail shortly because of the ULSD. Any opinion on this?

Lubrication qualities still dictated by ASTM specs.
Use search....tons written here; many reports attached etc. For what it's worth, mine likes the Redline additive too. I use it beacuse it idles quieter. As little as 1% biodiesel does the same.

The only thing ULSD will harn under your hood is old seals in an IP, it will not damage internals at all. Some cars will have IP seals start leaking while others will not. So far my 91 is hold up fine, but only about 1/2 tank of ULSD has been bought by me, not sure about PO fuel.
Only ones I have seen have trouble were folks switching from BD to ULSD no-bio, but there has been so much confusion due to rumors and people not reporting complete facts. I know the MB & CRD both seem to run a lot quiter and with less smoke then on LSD thats is for sure. Some have reported hard starting on cool to cold days, the CRD has this problem but not the MB for some reason. ![]()

No leaks on my '90 since ULSD started. It's been at least 4,000 miles since the switch.

I believe that it was around last June when the refiners were required to start producing it. Most pumps have the old stickers, as has been discussed ad-nauseum, for several reasons one being the residual sulfur in the tanks & delivery system.

In WI, I haven't seen a pump lately that hasn't got that sticker.
