Plug the vacuum line with a golf tee or something. Beware, it will blow your engine.
Just kidding... I didn't notice much difference but it stops sooty crap being recycled into the intake.

As was mentioned....plug the Vacuum Line with a "Golf Tee".....but that is a bit obvious......you can also insert a "BB" into the Vacuum connector and then hook it back up for the "Stealth" version, and accomplish the same thing...ot if you are really adventurous you can send a message to the moderator Brian Carlton, and purchase his "EGR Test Kit"...wink, wink.....and remove the EGR completely.....it cleans up the engine's appearance, and there is no chance of any exhaust leaking into the intake.....
The results aren't all that obvious, but they do eliminate the hot exhaust gas from entering the intake......there is an increase in efficiency...... SB Note: I do not carry a "Carlton Engineering" sponsorship logo on my car....but...I have installed his "EGR Test Kit" and have found it to be easily installed, and "in my opinion" it does clean up the look of the OM 617.9xx....also it is well worth the money...... ![]()

I found a quarter fits nicely if the valve is stuck open.

Since you have an 85 you really should plug the ARV on the turbo too. The BB in the line works there as well. You will see far more benefit from plugging the ARV than plugging the EGR. Also running your car with the EGR plugged and leaving the ARV functional is about the worst thing you can do for the environment.

It's connected by the EGR, it comes off the turbo. It's black vacuum line with a blue stripe down the middle.

Heh, I reconnected mine to stave off pre-ignition. My 95 does not like 40 cetane D2. Noticed nothing either way.
