300sd drive shaft question.

Hello Gents,

Well here I am starting the tranny swap and pulled the drive shaft out. I was trying to pull the shaft out a one unit it came apart, so now I have 2 pieces sitting there. Well now the big question, did I screw up??? I thought that I read some where that the 2 pieces are balanced together??? Is that right, if so what do I do now???

Also my center carrier bearing rubber has seen way better day, ok its cracked and only hanging on by less than half of the rubber. So I plan to replace the bearing and rubber carrier bearing also.

Anything else I should be looking at while I'm at it?? Should I put in K1 kit while I'm at it??? Is there any thing else I may have missed???

Thanks Joe

well, normally you would mark the 2 halves of the driveshaft, so it can go back together the way it was balanced. You might just get lucky and have it go back and still be smooth. Then again, I did that and still ended up with a vibration. Anyway, if you're doing the transmission, definitely do the K1 kit (though it's easily done with the tranny in the car) but more importantly do the B2 piston upgrade. The B2 takes 5 minutes to do with the trans out, takes about 2 hours with the trans in. You pick..

I got a manual 240D tranny and driveshaft, and it was apart, I matched the worn out rubber where it was torn, and I am certain I got it back together the way it was. look your shaft parts over and see if you can see dirt/rubber or something that will indicate the way it was.

SloJoe-

If your car is later than Sept 82, the balance marks were indicated on the driveshaft by the factory ( at least on the W123). They are cast into the metal so are kind of hard to figure out, but should be there. If your car is earlier, hope for the best.

Hi :

i was searching the forum and came across your comments it sounds like you might be able to help me hopefully

" short version "

How do i put the driveshaft back together properly so it's balanced like from factory .. after R & R the tranny i NOW find out too late the drive shaft balanced and " of course it didn't mark it when i took it out ... if i had known in the first place to do that i would have ...now i'm screwed i have this vibration ..... do you know how to " fix it " or balance it ....

i recently bought an 81 mercedes 300sd and drove it about 150 miles b4 the tranny went and ended up taking it out .... i've never worked on a mercedes b4 and thought nothing of taking the shaft out in pieces big deal right ... NOW i find out it seemingly is

i tried to see if i could notice any matching " marks but to no avail ... i was hoping and praying it was right ...but alas

you seems to know something about this can you help me out here

thanks a lot !!!

Take the entire drive line in to a shop to be balanced. Check around for transmission shops who can do it.
