I am doing my first self oil change on my 1983 300SD. I got the Knecht Oil Filter Fit. It is all pretty much straight forward but I have a question. There is a large “O” ring gasket that is easy to see where it goes on the canister lid. There are two washers, one brass and one steel that came with the filter. My question is, where do they go? I don’t see where they are on the canister or canister lid.
Thanks for your help……. |

kit pieces
the O ring goes around the canister lid and the washers go under the bolts that hold the canister lid on.Make sure you get the filter in correctly it must not touch the sides when it is installed it must sit center on the post inside the canister. Also be ready with somthing to catch the oil coming from the old filter it will still have some in it.
good luck. pete |

No, no washer goes under the oil filter cap nuts. The copper one is for the oil drain plug, the gray looking one is for on certain models of this engine, the oil filter cap, instead of having the center rod integral to the cap, has a long center bolt that screws into the cap. The gray one is for the long center bolt (if it has it), otherwise it can be tossed.

Thanks gillybenztech!
You were absolutly right. I looked at the drain plug bolt and it had a brass washer on it. I changed it out and everything is back and I am finished. I tossed the steel washer. Thanks again, IOU...... |

It really amazes me on the MB oil filters how much extra stuff needs to be tossed. The steel one you threw away is one example, the other is the filter for the 116/117 V8 engine oil filter, you always get the drain plug seal for both the 107 chassis type drainplug (huge copper seal) and the type used say on the 126 chassis, which is roughly if not exactly the same as the copper one you used on your Diesel. One of them you don't use, the 126 is more popular around here, so usually you toss this big honkin' copper seal ring. When I first started working on MB, I saved them, I'm kind of a saver anyways, but eventually it became clear "a use for these seal rings is not forthcoming" and I tossed them and continue to do so today. I could try saving up a barrel of them and taking them to the recycler, or the MB museum, but doesn't seem worth the shop space it would take up. Seems the best course of action would have been to make sure the drainplug would have remained the same for a given engine type, I would think it would have saved everyone some money. Unless going to the dinky drainplug saved them so much money that.....well, you get it.
